I want to become a writer but I lack the self confidence to put stuff on paper. Are there any good books on overcoming self doubt?

It happens to me a lot. I think a lot, and can talk about my ideas, but when it comes to writing, they all seem trivial and unworthy of even jotting down. I suspect the key realization is that everything that presents itself as innovative to others will always appear bleak and obvious to the one that has conceived it; simply because to think something up it has to fit your mental frame and we see something as innovative exactly when it doesn't. The moral being that we're notoriously poor judges of the quality of our ideas. I'm not saying they are all game-changers, but that even if they were, we would have no way of knowing without involving others.

If you're serious about writing you'll write every day. 500-1000 words. I'll tell you the same thing I tell my students: it's okay to write crap. Good first drafts are few and far between. You have to write the garbage out on to the page to get to the good stuff.
