Do I have to trust that it's better in the original language or is Houellebecq kind of an average writer? Cos I only recently started reading some of his stuff and while the subject matter and certain sections are good, the way it's written in general is pretty bland. I mean he's definitely not bad but it seems like he's been a bit overrated.

I've read him in French and in my native language. There's no real loss, although one translation I got was objectively bad. There's nothing special about translating his style from French.
Also, incels and other sorts of sexually inadequate people tend to focus on "Les Particules élémentaires" but it's not his best work.
