Thoughts on this novel?

It seems to get a lot of hate relative to Dick's other novels, but something draws me to it. Just finished it last week and I already want to reread it. I think I have a pretty good grasp on the ending but I don't think I fully understood the point he was trying to make with Childan's antiques and Edfrank's jewelry.

It is good and /lit/ loved it before the series came out.

The antiques/jewelry are about authenticity, the antiques have more value because they are authentic even if they are inferior or useless or too valuable to use them as intended. The pistol was authentic and valuable just because it was old, then the perception of it changed and it became worthless despite being the exact same item.

Picrel is a great zine from the turn of the century (might still be around) this issue is pretty much dedicated to the themes of The Man in the High Castle and other Dick novels of similar themes like Ubik. Might be available on the web or a used copy from the usual sources, well worth a read.

Just gave a look online and there is are a couple used copies about, no pdf, but there are about half the articles from the issue on their archived website, these two are probably the most relevant but the entire issue is dedicated too fake authenticity and the rest are worth reading.

It's always nice to imagine what the world would be like if the good guys won WWII, but we shouldn't allow ourselves to be stuck in the past.

I'm fully aware that the author was a schizo libtard. What makes me a real man is that I will not allow his slave morality pieties to interrupt my reveries upon the provocative theme.

Not sure how living in ones own personal fantasy makes you a real man, but if nothing else it plays wonderfully with the themes of the book.

I liked it. I thought the prose were eh though. Enjoying that one part where the japanese ceo gets sent to our reality for a moment and nearly goes mad.

I often wonder if you really could write as good of a novel using the I Ching as PKD supposedly did. Man in the High Castle isnt his greatest work im told but it sure was an interesting and original take on alt history at the time.

It's a good book, he just wrote a bunch of better ones, which may explain the supposed hate it gets relative to those. Never heard anyone hating on it in reality though.

Does the novel also stop being good after the second season?

I grew up in the bay area, so I really related to the passages about the antique seller's interactions with the young asian couple. I empathized with his inferiority and feelings of obsolesence, which were only amplified by the couple's efforts to accomodate him. But I am a non white non hispanic immigrant, so maybe I'm wrong for feeling that way. And when I think back, asians of different ethnic groups had similar ugly, jealous thoughts for each other. And ethnic groups within themselves had ugly, jealous thoughts for one another. So maybe I was just reading shit into my memories that didn't happen? When I reach that conclusion, I feel like I've confronted and defeated some ignorance within me. I feel like I've enriched myself. But I fear I will forget all too easily, and fall back even further into ugliness and jealousy. idk bros pray for me.
