The main character is the ultimate consoomer. But it’s a very entertaining book. Some parts have a little too much purple prose but all in all it’s very pleasant and luscious.

Consumption would imply some sort of relationship to others, or at least some renewal of his objects. Des Esseintes surrounds himself with nice things in a sort of aristocratic reaction to the mediocrity of his epoch, which sees the beginning of what we understand today as consumption. In these things he searches beauty and the presence of these things themselves, not the sign these things give to him or other. His goal is to make a place out of any kind of non-aesthetic process.

The reasons as to why Des Esseintes buys eccentric furnishings or jewels for his tortoises shell is not in any way unlike the hipster who buys something vintage or “out of style” as a means of countering mainstream culture. Des Esseintes may have better taste, yes, but he nonetheless takes part in the same sort of rampant consumerism that serves to prop up ones ego.

Easily one of my favorite books, looking up some of the art and books he references is a lot of fun. La Bas is also great if you enjoy A Rebours.

Since you're reading the original you won't need this, but for other anons here's a publisher that has a lot of Huysman's works translated http://www.dedalusbooks.com/our-books/?srch=huysmans

U mad bro? When did I say anything critical of consumerism outside of the concept of the book? Perhaps you’re taking what I said a little too personally. We are, after all, discussing a book, on a literature board…
Consumerism is a key aspect of the main characters psyche, as he is a contrarian. He yearns about a more genuine world, yet surrounds himself completely with artificiality. His preferences in art, literature, dress, etc. are completely dictated by the very people he claims to detest.
