Based. Even going missing has different connotations for the two. If you go missing in the forest people assume you were killed by a murder hobo or kidnapped, raped and killed by a redneck/serial killer. If you go missing in the desert people think it’s mysterious, you were swallowed up by the sands and are probably living as an arms trader or romantic revolutionary in some gruesome African conflict.

Actually, it's not fiction, but check out "The Life of Saint Anthony." It's a biography of Saint Anthony the Great, the founder of Christian monasticism. He was Egyptian, and spent much of his life in the desert, enduring temptation from the Devil.

As a bonus, the biography is written by Saint Athanasius the Great. So it's literally a biography of a saint, written by another saint.

This. I highly recommend In the Land of White Death. It's a true story of this Russian sailor who was second in command of a ship that got stuck in the arctic sea, after waiting it out for over a year it's clear to him they're never getting unstuck, so he leads those that choose to go with him on a trek across the frozen sea.
