thoughts on stripping down Christianity to its most base and simple parts and following that instead of wallowing in dogma? I’ve heard Tolstoy did it using the teaching of Jesus.

The Church collectively agreed to define certain essential doctrines in response to a deluge of heretical groups preaching all kinds of heresies. When people decided to decouple from these church bodies that did this they proceeded to define doctrine for themselves seeing it as still essential to do so and came to several radically different conclusions. After this happened two or three times you have modernist non-denoms who carry 50 pounds of dogmatic baggage around taking it for basic assumed truth that any Christian could see for self evident ignoring that Christianity had spent most of its histories fighting tooth and nail for these essential truths. Now Protestants have the audacity to act as if they are liberating Christianity when really they have opened the floodgates to heresy again and the fruits of this are self evident to anyone who gives even a cursory glance of Christianity in the west. The easiest way to show this to Protestants is to go line by line through the Nicene Creed, ask if they agree or disagree with each line, and ask where they think each line was defined and by who. By the time you get to the end you'll uncover 50 personal biases and surprisingly often they'll agree with theology derived from Rome in contrast to the East like the Filoque.

Jesus, if you forced him into a modern day political stance, would obviously not be right wing. Sure, he might disagree with abortion and a few other things like that, but under no circumstances would he be xenophobic, tough on crime, racist. He obviously wouldn't be against charity, universal healthcare, welfare, and so on. And he wouldn't favour the greedy, mamon-worshipping policies that see rich people pay little in tax and do nothing to help the poor. He'd probably be a communist, and live like the early Christians did as described in acts. Pic related. Bonus quote: And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Of course, in reality, Jesus never claimed to be the son of God. He was a failed apocalyptic preacher who believed that the world would end within the living generation at that time. Always fun to see people twist themselves into knots with their eisegesis to claim this isn't the case, though.

I don't wholly disagree with you, but the reason protestantism popped up was because the catholic church had also clearly begun to develop heretical beliefs, I don't think this is specific to splinter groups. Centralized religion is just as likely to be affected by the flaws of human nature, but it's also harder to beat back than in a decentralized system.

I'm currently reading Tolstoy's take on the Gospels and his removal of the spiritual infrastructure like the institution of the sacraments and the supernatural occurrences loses a lot of what I find to be beautiful in Christianity. I believe in a Church that stretches between Earth and Heaven and that really seems like what Christ was talking about too, I don't know to what extent you can separate His teachings from the institutions they created before you lose all pretense of it being Christ-like

All verses have a dual meaning, you have the in-text context and then the meaning that the verse has to you
So for example we read Isaiah 7:14 as a prophecy with an in-text meaning to take a virgin giving birth as a sign of God now we understand the in-text context of that verse but we also have a meaning to us now, that is that the prophecy of Jesus being born a virgin was made in the day of Isaiah
How do you not know this?

Fair enough, I guess, more context is required to show that it isn't specifically targeted to the individuals he's speaking with. I think the preceding verses make it clear that it's not meant to be discriminatory, though.
>Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

I practise Christianity simply by looking up pics of old paintings and medieval manuscripts like the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels while listening to Hildegard Von Bingen and such on Youtube. Maybe the Church-goers and the Bible-readers and the Theologycels would have a problem with that but it works for me.

>ctrl+f "resurrection"
>0/0 results

OP, what do you think could possibly be more "base and simple" about Christianity than the Resurrection? It's the one aspect of Jesus' life that exists in all four of the Gospels. It is the one aspect of Christianity that seems present in the early Church from the very start. Paul writes about "Christ crucified" in his epistles.

So I assume, then, that if you want to strip Christianity down to its "most base and simple parts," that would include the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, right?

You DO believe that Jesus LITERALLY rose from the dead, don't you, OP? Because if you don't, even the very earliest Christians would call you a sham.

yeah, I’m a Christian, you got a problem with that? I used to be a sinner like you but 2 years ago I found GOD. In my teens I would laugh at creationists; I would always tell my grandma that I didn’t want to go to mass; I was agnostic but not like r/Atheism. But when I GREW UP and became a man, I realised I needed to put childish things away (1 Corinthians 13:11). Why is that? Because I realized that we need Christianity to SAVE THE WEST. After I voted Trump in the 2016 election I decided to go to church again. I knew that I would find a QT pure Christian GF who I could lose my virginity to (I haven’t lost it yet because I’m saving myself for marriage, like God intended). I haven’t found her yet, but like Job I will pray and have faith in God. Then I saw Jordan Peterson talking about Christianity and I was hooked! (I don’t like him anymore though, he’s a fake Christian). I watched all his videos on the bible and realised how God reveals himself in many ways. I was on /pol/ (came from r/The_Donald during the election but I hate redditors now) Christian General and I saw /lit/ chart which had The Bible and I KNEW I found my people. Every day I see THE WEST falling because we gave up our FAITH. Well, the new Christian intellectuals are coming; We are the sons of the Crusaders and we shall not recoil before the sons of Voltaire! (Candide was shit, so is Nietzsche (haven’t read either of them)). /lit/ introduced me to Kierkegaard and I became a KNIGHT OF FAITH, so now I know that I just gotta believe and that’s TRUE bravery. I read DANTE and DOSTOEVSKY and I saw the beauty of God and true art. I’m a proud Catholic (Protestants are heretics) but I hate Pope Francis, he’s a heretic and isn’t MY Pope. /lit/ is a Christian board, and I know that if I just keep recommending the Bible, telling people to go to church, and making threads about how great God is, I will finally be able to sincerely believe in God and distract myself from the gnawing feeling that I’m a fraud. Faith ain’t easy.
