Ibn Arabi, based or cringe? I think it's a mix of both. He explicitly denounces crypto-Buddhist stances on union with God (Guenon and his Sufi initiator Ivan Agueli confused texts by Ibn Sab'in with that of Ibn Arabi). He doesn't hate the world, the body, sexuality, or women (he had many female spiritual teachers). His cosmology is extremely fun and possibly even influenced Dante.

But he has a very cringe, banal, and proto-boomer take on the diversity of beliefs/conceptions of God. He literally states that people worshipping stones are still worshipping God, only in a more limited way. He claimed Noah caused the flood because he didn't see that there's still God in idolatry, and also that Pharaoh is saved. He thinks recognizing God in all things, while still knowing that God transcends all things, is so profound when really it's banal. Taking this seriously, rather than poetically, makes it difficult to apply moral standards to religion and to critique others in a substantial way. Relativist garbage.

When asked by a Sultan what to do with Christians, Ibn Arabi advocated for their harsh persecution, so it's not like he practised what he preached. On top of this hypocrisy is a epic spiritual presumptuousness and arrogance. Ibn Arabi is always making claims about his intellectual and spiritual superiority, while constantly claiming you shouldn't have any aspects of "Lordship" yourself, (ie you should be completely modest) to become close to God. He can't stop comparing his spiritual level with others (usually to denigrate them and say they're of a lower rank) and he believes he is the seal of Muhammadan sanctity, meaning he has received the fullness of the knowledge of Muhammad and no one after him will get knowledge of God directly from Muhammad. They will all have to get it directly from other saints/prophets, and only indirectly from Muhammad.

Well, Guenon became more knowledgeable about Sufism later in his life, and he didn't changed his opinion on its relation with Advaita and Taoism. He had at least 50 books in arabic in his library, pretty sure that he read Ibn Arabi in original and probably one of his advisors on understanding his works was Michel Valsan who had a lot of knowledge about Ibn Arabi.

Proof you've never read him. Wahdat al-wujud is a term never ever employed by Ibn Arabi. It's a revision made by later commentators and does not come from him nor is it his main focus. Ibn Arabi is about human perfection. He distances himself from advaita/plotinian focus on perceiving absolute, pure unity being the goal of spirituality. Read the Mawaki and passages in the Futuhat.

Again, you are mistaking Ibn Sab'in for Ibn Arabi, the latter Guenon never read and was only taught his teachings by Ivan Agueli, who mistakenly translated someone else's text while attributing it to Ibn Arabi.

So can someone give me a good list of books to read about sufism?
So far I have Toshihiko Izutsu - Sufism and Taoism which looks at Ibn Arabi's doctrines but I want more, is there a 500 page book that tries to introduce sufism with 200 pages of notes by any chance?
Also idk if I can get into the Masnavi but the proem is really great, especially as someone who plays the ney, at first only cause I thought the instrument sounded good and I liked listening to the ottoman musical tradition, only later did I discover it's place in certain forms of sufism.

Izutsu is alright. It's only focused on the Fusus and imo it's not that great. It's very much in the spirit of post-modern academia and I think it's not that accurate.

I can't recommend anything simply on Sufism, but I will say Chittick's two books The Sufi Path of Knowledge and The Self-Disclosures of God are very good. If you like Rumi you will Ibn Arabi's The Translator of Desires collection of love poetry. These are the poems he wrote to Nizam that some say was an influence on Dante's Vita Nuova.
