Xenophon's anabasis is the funniest thing I read in a while
>then we came to a populous city, which was very rich
>then we marched 20 parasanges to a city, which was very populous and rich
>we crossed a river. it had a width of three plethrons
>parasanges
>phletrons
>zeus willing
>the gods willing
>Kyros was the best of friends

Don't know why but his way of telling the story is charming. Any other greek text that's like this? preferably nothing philosophical.

I suggest you read Xenophon's Hellenica (history from 411-362 BC if i remember). More serious and political, but still a great read.

Xenophon has been overshadowed by Thucydides for too long. It is a pity for he was a great writer of many genres, and lived a fascinating life. Not a world changing genius like other Greeks, but I feel that this makes him more approachable and relatable.

holy BASED. Thucydides has long been overrated by academics who masturbatorily idealise his florid language. Xenophon is better by leaps and bounds.

Well, Hellenica was a poor imitation of Thucydides, though to give Xenophon credit nobody else bothered to pick up where Thucydides left off.

That said, his Anabasis is wonderful (and laid the foundation for Alexander's later conquests), and his political and philosophical works (Cyropaedia, various dialogues) are all good.

Cynegeticus (hunting with dogs) is based, and I'm told that his book on breaking horses is very good as well but I have not read it.

thanks anon. Any other authors similar to Xenophon you can recommend?

Thucydides is based and a role model for me.

This is simply not funny. I love Greek tragedies, but Aristophanes sucks. Even the satyr plays are better than his comedies.

Xenophon invented Ernst Junger. I think Junger may even have been Xenophon in a reincarnated form.

cool thought anon. but Xenophon didn't set out with Kyros to fight, while Jünger went to war enthusiastically, didn't he? Nonetheless, Storm of Steel is a great read.

Maybe greeks general would get more replies if the OP was better and didn't make it seem like it's a xenophon thread

I felt the same at first. You might want to have a look at the „New“ Comedy. It’s not as serious as the old comedy and mostly deals with love stories involving trickery.

Sadly, very little of Menander survived the centuries, but Terence (and Plautus though I haven‘t read him yet) reused his material, so you can also read him.

You should definitely read his works on horsemanship and cavalry command. they're great.

What the fuck was his problem?

Most likely he himself saw his actions as justified, the Greek were after all "the other" and had marched with pretender in civil war.

The best part is his casual mentions of raiding villages to get provisions. It seems as if regular peasants, villagers, unprotected cities are merely "gas-stations" for the ten thousand to get provisions, slaves and women.
