How would you compare 2666 to other postmodern tomes (Infinite Jest, Gravity's Rainbow)?

Better, although I haven't read any of those books.

O.K.

>> No.1841198

i have only read gravity's rainbow and it has been some time. they are kind of similar in their complexity, i guess. bolano's use of language is alot better though. i havent read the other one. bolano is a much better poet than novelist but you can see his skills in his novels

Not okay with that.

5. The Savage Detectives

2666 is by far his best work, the others are about average. I don't understand why he wrote a great book like 2666, but everything else I've read was so-so. I guess 2666 was his last book, and so he knew what was what by then.

op back

How do you possibly put The Savage Detectives above 2666?

I think my numbers 1 and 2 (and 3) are pretty indisputable. I definitely do not agree with the guy above me who put it fifth. I did not include Last Evenings on Earth because its not a novel, I didn't include Nazi Literature in the Americas either though both are great

I want to read some more of his books, maybe all (except lol poetry), but they're so expensive at the moment. £20 for a hardcover that's 150 pages long. Hard to come by, too. My Waterstones only has 2666, TSD, and NLITA, usually. Actually, I'm pretty surprised they even have that many. I mean, Bolano isn't mainstream, there aren't many serious readers who've read him.

You obviously don't understand the monument he built for latin american poetry in Los Detectives Salvajes. A beautiful homage to Latin American modernism written in prose.

Of course, you're not from here, so, it's okay.

You are actually probably right. It wouldn't surprise me if Latin Americans bibliophiles like The Savage Detectives and US and Euopeans like 2666.
I have read everything Bolano that has been translated though and I have to give the edge to 2666 though TSD is incredible.

By Night in Chile should be available at most big bookstores and it's pretty awesome. My local Barnes and Noble has a pretty decent Bolano selection. BNIC should be pretty cheap as it is a paperback novella. It cost like $14.
