TFW you use the word aptitude in conversation and people think you said attitude. Is it ever appropriate to use vocabulary words in practical conversation?

My boomer coworker asked me to say what was different about the room we were in. We had waxed the floor the previous night. Two objects on the counter had changed position. This had nothing to do with the job we had done. I told him these were picayune observations. Of course I had to explain what picayune means. Did I do a cringe?
