Well... maybe not. Lower enlisted have a few hours to themselves after 1700 or 1800, assuming there's no mandatory function they need to attend after hours. I managed to read quite a bit when I was a private and specialist, usually in bed. Officers are held to higher standards and you may find making time for leisure reading difficult. Read and compare your different translations of Homer at the gym, that's what I did. Treadmill gang.

Tbh it really, really depends on the field you're in, your MOS, your boss, and the particular unit you're in. Even down to platoon level. E.g. first platoon may have a different mission with different-from-normal working hours and as a result less hands-on micromanagement from day-shift senior NCOs and officers.

There were parts I hated and there were parts I absolutely loved. Getting shot at is fun, and shooting back is even better. IEDs are not so fun. Over the course of a deployment I made some of the strongest friendships I'll ever make in my life. Walking around all day waiting to get shot at isn't fun, but the feeling of sitting around bullshitting with your blackhearted buddies after patrol is one of the most sublime things in the world. There is literally no greater peace on earth than being in a country full of people who want to kill you but at that specific time are not trying to do so. Also, we smoked a fuckton of Afghan hash.
