has brevity become even more important given potential readers' lack of attention span in the 21st century?

Yeah but in my experience you hit brevity pretty quick without sacrificing other elements. I'm practicing humor and some story telling elements when I write

You cannot possibly encapsulate the same amount of information as before past a certain threshold of increasing brevity. This cannot end well and I'd say a select group of people are going to retain their attention span for the sake of not losing information - you can choose to write to such folks or the Z00M3Rs rather than being forced into being brief all the time.

If tv and film weren't such a deathblow to fiction I would enjoy making writers squirm to write better including some brevity but too much is sacrificed by media that it makes any issue in writing paltry.
