But I will admit some parts were a bit dull without the songs

Gavroche was the best character and I hated that Cosette turned into a thot and was little more than a prop in the latter parts of the book. Considering all she'd been through her character at the end of the book was painfully boring and submissive. I really liked the dialogue that the Friends shared, it was well written and surprisingly funny. The Waterloo excerpt was also interesting. The headier shit expounded on in the background was well done. The characters were emotionally compelling (I cried a little) and relatable. I found it to be a really good piece of work, and I'd say the same for Hunchback.

Being able to emote real passion into a song can cover a lot of technical flaws in a performance.

yeah i dunno what the problem was. it wasn't a big, bombastic performance like you might get in a theatre, but that was the point of the film, it was intimate, muted performances filmed with intense close ups and shit, it wasn't supposed to be a performance aimed at the back rows of seats.
the superior Javert is obviously Philip Quast in the 10th Anniversary Show though. and Colm Wilkinson's booming, prog-rock singer Valjean rules.

People with problems with Russel's singing are the same people who had problems with Gerald's singing in Phantom of the Opera. Because it's not muh operato voice with muh classical singing tenor and pitch, they decry it as glorified shouting when that's just what singing is anyways.
