Hello /lit/. My grandfather is turning 89 and I'd like to buy him a nice book. Now, his attention-span is rather short due to the deadly combination of age and E-mail, but I know that he can still enjoy what I'm looking for:

I need a recommendation for one of those nice, thick, heavily illustrated books that people give as presents, in subject of either modern history (preferably the World Wars) or geography.

Counting on you guys.

Why not just buy him a nice fresh male hooker?

Bump

Are you sure the old man wants a book? If I were his age I would wish a quick death, probably.

get him the asoiaf series and troll the fuck out of him about how chances are either him or the author will die before the series ends.

You should probably get him a collection of short stories so he doesn't feel as overwhelmed.

Seriously, you just answered your own question. Go into Barnes and Nobles, and look for illustrated histories of WWI/WWII. Results will be either collections of drawings, or collections of photographs/maps/documents. Both will usually come with commentary by historians.

Good stuff. I'd do the same thing if my grandfather wasn't already dead.

Ok, problem is that I'm not an Americn (while my grandfather main reading language is English, so I do plan on buying a book in English), and I'm planning on ordering from Book Depository, so if anyone can please specify me a bit more...

Oh. Sorry.

Well, there's an Oxford Illustrated History for either world war. Also there's Fighting Men of World War II: Allied Forces - Uniforms, Equipment and Weapons, by David Miller. There's also a separate Axis equivalent too.

Why not give him along with the photobook Hemingway's "The old man and the sea"? Maybe he'll get something out of it.
Just a suggestion!

He's not fucking retarded, he read Hemingwey.

Thank you very much.
