How do you read without subvocalizing AND without using your finger to trace?

>> No.18324624

With my eyes you fucking mongoloid.

>> No.18324642

I do not think it’s possible to stop subvocalizing but just try to read without tracing with your fingers. Eventually it’ll get natural. Not much to think about.

I miss agatha

>> No.18324656

subvocalizing is how prose is meant to be enjoyed

>> No.18324674

>>18324642
It is absolutely possible. When I'm especially fired up, my eyes don't move horizontally - they hang in the center and move down the page without any subvocalization. They just sort of take in chunks of text. I don't think this a good habit though, should only be employed for unpleasant writing (say a rare & unique but dry or badly-written history book)

>> No.18324710

I use a bookmark to cover up the page immediately below the line I'm reading if I'm having trouble focusing and that usually helps, but it has to be a totally blank bookmark with no text on it.

Despite the memes on here, there is no shame in subvocalizing. I do different voices and rhythms for different characters and different kinds of writing. For me it adds a lot to the experience.

I've been taking 25 mg of adderall almost daily for about a year now. For my adhd of course. Maybe I'm growing tolerant to it. I'm not sure.

>> No.18324905

>>18324867

Maybe... did you always have this issue or ? It might also have to do with practicing. If you don't read usually you tend to have this habit of using finger and voice, but eventually goes away.

Or if it's from ADHD, maybe an alternative option would be audio books ?

“I took a speed-reading course and read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It involves Russia.” -- Woody Allen

>> No.18325245

>>18325222

You lose a lot if you just speed read through stuff. Reading is not about mileage, but about learning and enjoying the experience.

I remember when I read War and Peace, it coincided with me starting to learn French so I used the French bits of War and Peace to practice my french translation, that was fun (I could compare them right away with the translation on the same page to see if I got it right).
