Consider this:
1. If Pynchon was really a recluse he wouldnt've been photographed in NY.
2. Undoubtedly well-read, he creates bloated stories with superfluous characters having no substance to them.
3. His humo(u)r is noticeable, albeit sophomoroic and tryhard.
4. Dubs.

>1. If Pynchon was really a recluse he wouldnt've been photographed in NY.
He is not a recluse, he just has no interest in celebrity.
>2. Undoubtedly well-read, he creates bloated stories with superfluous characters having no substance to them.
Applies somewhat to his first two works, but nothing else.
>3. His humo(u)r is noticeable, albeit sophomoroic and tryhard.
His humor is just that of prewar (WWII) times and quite good within that context, If it was tryhard he would not be using antiquated humor still. The sophmoric quality is primarily because of its prewar roots.
>4. Dubs.
1 out of 4 is pretty good for /lit/.

This is not entirely false, but there's nothing wrong with that. After all, we live in a bloated world full of superfluous characters with no substance to them. Pynchon is the epitomal postmodern author, and his work is heavily steeped in the times. There's no way to reach inside his head to divine the truth of his intentions, but I like to see it as a completely intentional reflection of the ongoing cheapening of humanity. From Pynchon's outsider view, from the outside looking in, the world must seem like a whorl of self-important cardboard cutouts marching around, acting according to nothing more than their own individual confluxes of unknowable, competing causalities. If the characters seem shallow and ultimately inconsequential—interchangeable, even—this is because they're supposed to be. It's a mirror to reality.
