>Read Fanfiction.net's content and watch VN playthroughs for fun as a teen.
>Use it to expand my vocabulary and get ahead of my peers
>Going back to find something I'll enjoy
>Everything I find seems terrible, for one reason or another.
>Unrealistic interactions, shill focus, unfocused plot, cheap humor, bad grammar, or Gary Stu MC.
>Even with the ones I've already read, they're unbearable.
>Not reading or writing anything because I'm too critical to enjoy anything.
How do I go back? I just want to like things again.

You're an adult mate. There's no going back. It's fine to have an appreciation for what you liked when you were younger but don't burrow your head in the sand. Read literature with more nuance, that reflects your current understanding of the world better.

I'm stuck there. The things that best match my palette make me feel dreadful afterwards, or don't have much of a fanbase to interact with.

I'm a man. I just stayed indoors and browsed TvTropes all the time.

I've heard great things about Higurashi and Umineko if you haven't read those. Very active fanbases too.

Those aren't my thing. Liked Monogatari, but I'm afraid to find out if the other anons were telling the truth about Senjou breaking up with Araragi, so I stopped reading. I've got Boogiepop on my to-read list though.

I hate girls who smoke. You don't look cool, you're ruining your skin, prematurely aging yourself, making sure you smell bad and ensuring that you'll have the voice of a grandma by your 30s.

As much as I like Umineko, it is very poorly written from any literary standpoint. If you want a good VN, read Narcissu or Swan Song. If you dont mind anime and everything it entails though, Umineko can be pretty fun at times

I've read some decent fanfics as an adult but they're absolutely diamonds in the rough. OP is correct that the vast majority of fanfics are trash.

I used to write Dragon Ball and Star Wars fanfics when I was 14. I really enjoyed doing them, and I met some really nice people while doing it, but when I look back I see how much they sucked. They were just edgy and cliche shit that I regret having published under my real name.

you have curate that shit, fanfic recs on tvtropes tend to display well-written stuff.
Filtering and tags are your best friend.

It also depends on the subject matter. I used to be huge fan of dxd fan fiction, the OP mc, mc x harem shit exhausted even my 14 year old weeb self at some point.

Anything Anime-related is almost certain to be filled with poison. Kek. You're better off reading YA fiction for 14-year old teens

i mostly read fics related Worm, these days. I don't have that same love as my younger self, but a tingling is still there. Hope you find your little anchor.

They aren't.
t. watched all of Monogatari after stopping at 2nd Season.
Also why the fuck are you afraid of character interactions? So what if Senjougahara dumps Araragi? It's part of the story. You comment that more nuanced medium makes you feel dreadful but for me, that's the point. I enjoy the hole left in my chest after finishing a compelling book.

Hurts a bit much for me.

It becomes an emotional drain pretty quickly. Interesting, but not satisfying.

Based, you've transcended the need for Literature. When you're too patrician to enjoy anything, you can finally go and live your life - no novel, film, composition, etc. can "defeat" you.
