The Obelisk Gate, The Broken Earth #2 - N.K. Jemisin (2016)
This may be the most exasperating novel I've ever finished. I may feel differently later, but in this moment, it's true. Jemisin's short work "Emergency Skin" is also one of the most exasperating stories I've ever read, which qualifies her for quite possibly being the most exasperating authors whose work I've ever finished. This repetition of exasperation is important, because it'd be difficult for to understate my exasperation. So much so that it nearly makes everything else about what I read irrelevant by comparison.
Aside from that, there are a lot of problems I have with everything else as well. By comparison to the first book, and nothing else, this one was disappointing as well. If the first book was about anger or hate, this one goes beyond that into apathy and indifference. While the first book had its share of murder, both mass and personal, this one far exceeds it in every way. If nothing else, this has shown me just how casual and dull genocide can be. Compared to the first book, this doesn't go much anywhere, at least in terms of physically traveling, but also to a lesser extent in every way.
One of the worst problems for me is how I was unable to separate the author from the work, and even if I were able to do so, I don't know that I'd feel any different other than to feel it to a lesser degree. The narrative presented here is deeply troubling, disagreeable, and misguided. The solution for oppression is not indiscriminate murder, nor is trauma a justification for it. There's a lot of hypocrisy as well. What particularly bothers me is that based on what I know of the author, which is admittedly little aside from her works, that is that I can't be certain she doesn't endorse lesser versions of these positions. Even if she doesn't at all, it still bothers me, and not because of any particular characteristic of hers.
I'll be reading the third book for little else than closure and then I probably won't read anything from her again. She writes well enough, but I'm not able to enjoy it. I'd say it's unfortunate, but that isn't the case, because it's an intentional decision for her to have written this way and for me to make that decision. I'm not mad, I'm frustrated, disappointed, and irritated, which is to say, exasperated.

The Stone Sky, The Broken Earth #3 - N.K. Jemisin (2017)
This was better than the second book, but that doesn't say much about it. Most of my negative feelings about the series have dissipated, if only because it's over and there's no sense to be actively upset about it afterwards. It's also been some days since I've finished to let my temper cool, which wasn't the case for the previous review, but I'm not going to change anything about it. Though, I don't think it would've been much different regardless, this was an unfortunate time for me to read this.
The genocidal trend continues, as does the anguish, suffering, and general negativity. The book continued to demand emotions from me that I refused to recicoprate, let alone agree with.
The ending was acceptable, though lacking in follow through, which I'm conflicted about. I would've disliked that ending even more, but I also don't think it was necessarily earned.
Overall the series is much more about admiring its emotional palette than anything else, which is unfortunate because as noted I wasn't able to relate which severely affected my enjoyment.
I don't think I'll be reading anything from Jemisin in the future, as every work I've read from her thus far has left me preferring that I hadn't overall. It's just not worth it for me personally.
I understand that many have enjoyed this, including in the group, but I don't care and honestly I'm not really interested in knowing why, I'd prefer not to know really. It's quite possible I'm being hypocritical, but that would be up to someone else to tell me how I am.
My involvement with this is over and I won't think of it again. It's for the best.

I didn't have such strong feelings of repulsion about those books, but fuck the pacing was so dull and the new characters uninteresting especially compared to the first one, which really only had one point of view even if divided into three different periods of her life. In my opinion in all the series she was only able to write one engaging character, which also reads like a clear self-insert. Dropped the third one somewhere at the beginning and I don't regret it. Most of them are not even published on paper, they are posted on sites like samlib.ru. It's definitely fun to read stuff like this sometimes, but most of these books, albeit filled with great ideas, are written in terrible language. Here's an example of samlib.ru madness (by the author of "Space adventures of Donald Trump" and "Bee Isekai"), machine translated from Russian and slightly edited by me :

Great black hero George Floyd was killed by the police. And his resurrected soul, by the will of the Most High God, was moved to a parallel universe where the United States was captured by the Third Reich. African Americans are in brutal slavery, and courageous hero George Floyd is raising all the oppressed to fight fascism. And there are very beautiful barefoot girls assisting him, who are able to hit a bull's eye!

I don't get it. It's sloppily constructed, intentionally vague, and peopled with ridiculous characters. There is distinction between wit and mere cleverness, and this one clearly belongs in the latter category. I'm not sure exactly what happens, but I also don't care what happened. Getting through the fourth book was a laborious chore that I only embarked upon in the faint hope that it would make sense of the first three books. Though it wears a cloak of science fiction it is mere fantasy, complete with all the idiotic plot devices which make fantasy unbearable - extended dream sequences, magic swords, mysterious people who all know more than the narrator but refuse to let him in on their secrets, prophecies and demons and angels.

To create a pantheon, you need to first think of food, water and natural forces in the enviroment of your story.

So, let's say that the society that you have created lives in the coast, harvesting the fruits of the ocean. It is more likely that they will have an ocean god that it is also a provider. More often, divine entities that provide earthly comforts are seen as femenine, while destructive natural forces are seen as masculine.

For example, think of the same society, when they that the ocean is raging and destroys things, they are most likely to create a new god that represents the destructive side of the ocean. Then you can say that said god (the destructive one) is related to the one that provides. They perhaps are siblings, or father and child.

Also, avoid thinking of gods like they are presented in pop culture. Most pantheons have gods that are worshipped individually by a single tribe and then they amalgamate in a single religion.

Terminus Est isn't magic, it's just a regular executioner's sword with mercury inside it. People calling Terminus Est magic was allegedly a pet peeve of Wolfe's because nowhere in the text is it even implied to have supernatural capabilities and the interpretation is entirely the result of reading fantasy tropes which aren't there into the series, such as you did. You didn't even mention the one possibly magical item Severian does have, the Claw

There are also no demons or angels. With "mysterious strangers" I'm guessing you mean Dr Talos, Baldanders and the cacogens, and the identity of all those people is explained near the end of Sword of the Lictor (you may also mean the Green Man but that one is self-explanatory, and Hethor and Jonas are explained even earlier). Series where the character learns of a hidden aspect of our world are obviously excluded. Otherwise Twilight, and every horror novel would be isekai.
As a simple example, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan and Pellucidar (the hollow earth series) books are not isekai. Tarzan goes to New York, which is obviously a new world and fantastical to him, but it isn't isekai. Likewise, while the hollow earth in The Land that Time Forgot is fantastical and hidden away, they manage to find it using normal means.
The Barsoom series (John Carter of Mars), on the other hand, are isekai. Carter dies and wakes up on Mars where he has superhuman powers owing to his growing up in higher gravity. The people there have no knowledge of Earth, and in general the world is entirely different.

If you enjoy it I highly recommend Tad Williams' newer books. I feel he has improved with every series he wrote. MS&T is a lovingly crafted classic epic fantasy series but it's also extremely slow, ponderous at times, I would say, but if you enjoy moving very languidly through a plot then that can be a pleasant experience. He gets better at pacing his stories, but by contemporary standards he's still very slow. The payoff for stuff you read in Dragonbone Chair will not be felt for a long time yet in MS&T, and that's typically how Tad's stories roll. Many hundreds of pages of gradual setup to get the momentum going and then a lot of things happen all at once near the end of the story.

Yeah, I read it, Eifelheim is one of those transcendent science fiction stories where an author is able to treat very human and Earth-bound issues with a well-reasoned and fascinating gloss of aliens and science. The sheer amount of research put into the novel to make a complete picture of a small medieval German town and it's surrounding politics, not to mention the great walk-on parts of Occam and the peripheral references to Roger Bacon, made the novel a true tour-de-force. Author Michael Flynn's alien mythos and capabilities are believable and seamlessly integrated into the very real history of plague-era Germany.

Wish more Authors had that kind of dedication.

Very stupid people with low levels of language understanding can go and 1-star whatever they want. Again, just read the 1 star reviews, they're all some variant of "So much sexism, I literally can't even" or "wtf, I don't understand what he is saying".

Also you didn't address my point in any way. The fact that people who can barely speak English have just as much weight on goodreads as people who have a high literacy/OECD level makes it worthless to use. A scholar at oxford might give X book a 5/5, but a ESL 80IQ kid might give it a 1/5 because its nothing like the video games he plays.

>DOES ANYONE ELSE LOVE DEAD WHITE MALE LITERATURE?
Literature is supposed to open up your mind to other world views and experiences. As a white guy myself I want to see the world without the tinted lens of white privilege with which I was born with. And having an open mind to allow works from other mediums and cultures is the first crucial step towards that goal.
The parochial snobs who are gatekeeping /sffg/ reminds me of picrel. Except Bloom Himself would probably love anime and is intelligent enough to realize the importance of the social commentary and depth in shows like Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online if he were openminded enough to watch it.
