Flannery O'Connor is such an awful storyteller. That one with the boring, paper-thin characters, where the bad guy was named fucking Bad Guy or Misfit or some such shit and killed the people whose car brokedown for no reason?

>oh well Catholic metaphors blah blah morals blah religion

Flannery O'Connor sucks. Pic related.

Well, I'm religious, but I have to be dark and edgy like those 20th century existentialists. Hm.

I had to read, analyze and write two essays about three or four of her stories back in my Catholic high school days.

All of her stories were pretty lame.

I still remember the one where its the angsty fuck and his fat racist mom and then I'm supposed to realize that hating people for their prejudice is just as bad as being prejudice. Okay the South, okay.

Fuck you, 1984 was great. I guess all of his other work was bordering on shittier, so I'll let that slide, although I do have a book of his essays that I love to death.

That's actually what i love about her stories. Shit has such a low probability of going wrong and it goes wrong anyway. It's magical.

"Wildcat", "The Barber" and of course, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" are my favorites from her.

I very much like all of the authors, arguing their position on an off-the-top-of-my-head list is pointless as the difference between how much I like them is negligible. And FOC had awful short-stories with predictable endings the protagonist is either going to kill himself or be murdered by some unrealistic Catholic metaphor antagonist and run-of-the-mill Catholic theology coated in try-hard 20th century existential grit.

>>1818675
Hey dickhead, Orwell is one of my favorites and I referred to him as a "giant". He just doesn't top my list.

>>1818670
He's hilarious, his work is touching and his plots are original and captivating. He's also one of the forerunners of Post-Modernism in Literature.

I see no Somerset Maugham on this list but it is most likely an oversight by you nice fellows.

Also it is erroneous to say one author is better than another because they both usually wrote in completely different styles, time periods, topics and languages.
