Honestly believe cosmic horror could’ve been really interesting had writers developed on his ideas. But they all just use muh old ancient gods so ancient and cool and epic as an excuse for lazy writing

>> No.18181927

It struck me this morning that Lovecraft combines an archaic sensibility with cutting edge science fiction. He was probably the first to set a horror story aboard a submarine for example. People often single-out the old-timey language, but this was a deliberate affection--even in his day no one talked like that--and combines it with a manifest awareness of the very latest scientific discoveries. It's quite striking.

not his fault he's incredibly original and everyone who copied him are not

I mean 20000 leagues under the sea is kind of sort of a horror story.

Weird fiction as a genre is a billion times better than cosmic horror. No one since Lovecraft has done "cosmic horror" that has been worthy of the name while simultaneusly completely forgetting about weird fiction. Tragic

Absolutely all weird fiction authors are terrible. They go beyond lovecraft pastiche into the realm of shitty plagiarism. Lovecraft's fine but he's not a very effective horror writer.

Definitely doesn't compare with greats such as M.R. James (who incidentally did the horrible tentacle monster thing before Lovecraft to genuinely terrifying effect)

But cthluhu and the Necronomicon are so frequently referenced. How can he be so horrible and at the same time a terrible author.

Lovecraft is only remembered because he published most of his stuff right before Mickey Mouse was created and Disney would later bribe generations of Congress to freeze copyrights from that point on.

Most of Lovecraft is in the public domain and free to reprint and adapt into sequels, games, etc. He's popular because his work is proto scifi and fantasy.

There are probably hundreds of better writers in the genre from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s who are completely obscure no one wants to risk being sued to reprint or adapt.
