Would it come across as odd if I refer to the philosophers that I'm talking about in my paper by their first names, provided that I mentione their full name the first time they come up, respectively? I feel quite close to them and find it overly formal to call them by their surnames

That would be unnecessarily tedious for the reader of your paper.

You didn't know them.

Do any of the Greeks even have 'first' names?

You're not writing a diary or an letter, you're writing a paper that is meant to be read by people other than you.
Also, your feeling of closeness is probably heavily exaggerated, you don't know much of their person and character, you only really know their philosophical thought.

They only have first names.

It is natural to you, it's not necessarily natural to others. Understand that. Neither is stylistic intuition always the right choice.

Greek naming conventions varied but Athenians generally followed a name-patronym-toponym
There were also clans-families like the Alcmeonides

Just use their last names you huge pseud. If this a paper for school your professor will think you're a twat and tell you to change it
