I don't know why this is as good as it is. It on theory should be the most boring crap ever, battle after battle with a million different names to remember, but I remember it fondly. For comparison, the Illiad I found to be very tedious and boring.

The Monkey King/Journey to the west is literally shonen shit though. Dragon Ball is very close in spirit to the source material.

Do explain. Monkey King especially seemed like the script for a shonen anime. It's been years since I remember reading it, and the only thing that stood out for me that was somewhat clever was the challenge between Buddha and the Monkey King where he has to leap out of Buddha's palm.

Journey to the West completely encapsulates the Chinese nu-symbol of the wanderer. All of his adventures are in some way allegoric of some broader truth of the human condition. The historical and cultural persona and phenomena are portrayed and satirized in an extremely accurate way, that shows the futility of society embedded in the legalist tradition and the absurdity of idolatry in the various religious traditions of china. In essence, it champions individualism.

The show is fucking great. One of my favourite foreign TV series, and certainly the best chinese made film.show I've seen. Fun to get a little stoned and watch. The battles are hype and the major characters are all funny and based.
