You should read the works of St. Francis de Sales, he was one of the principle intellectual figures of the Counter-Reformation. He was, in particular, directly opposed to John Calvin, because he was appointed Bishop of Geneva. There were long periods when he could not enter the city because of the Calvinists who wanted to kill him, so he would often roam about the outskirts of the city, ministering to souls as he could.

As a bonus, he is the patron saint of writers, so he is essentially /lit/'s patron saint.
