How's the writing career coming, /lit/?

>> No.18162299

I'm able to pay my bills for the most part. Mostly doing commissioned writing for bloggers, corporate types looking to advertise their shit on Amazon, or Moms with a romance novel in mind and little skill hiring me to ghost write their stuff.

Mostly I do editing. Like I said, pays my bills but doesn't leave a whole lot of time for personal projects I'm trying to finish.

Getting my novella edited and released. Working on my first big series but I keep getting stumped by technical details because I'm trying to mix space fantasy with hard sci fi

>> No.18162334

I will never be a writer.

I do some freelance editing work, but that's as close as I'll ever come, I think.

How'd you get into that, and how much does it tend to pay?

>> No.18162418

I had about a hundred pages of my novel banged out, then couldn't work on it for several months, and now that I can again I just don't know what to do with it.

I actually started on Fiverr and Upwork and got tired of dealing with their cuts. So for repeat customers who I ended up getting a good relationship with I'd just tell them to contact me on Twitter, Discord, or an Email I always had opened, and then it grew from word of mouth there since a lot of these people liken themselves to Authors and talk in other Author Facebook or Reddit groups and I got around word of mouth for writing romance.

For pricing, I started off at 1c a word, but now Im in enough demand that I raised it to 2c a word. 1,000 words is about half an hour of writing for me and that's about $10 give or take.

Course that doesn't come with outlining, proofreading, or anything like that so it evens out a bit more.

I’ve developed a complex about bringing myself to write. In terrified of what I write because I feel like it’s not good and I know I won’t be able to turn this into a career, at least not any time soon.

Based. Are you self-publishing?

Ya, I have money to advertise and don't feel like trying to deal with publishing houses at the moment

I'm jealous, Anon. I'm actively trying to get a book series published. First book is done, working on the second book right now. I'm trying to get the first book published and I'm not sure what route to take. I've queried a few agents and have looked at a few small presses. Gotten some rejections already. I'm hoping for good news. Unlike you, I don't have money to advertise self-publishing.

One thing I have thought to do is serialize it and put it on some kind of website that highlights its content. Amazon just released a new Kindle service that lets you release serialized content in a way that gets attention, and I have seriously thought about using it. I've also thought about putting my novel on Substack.

I have a semi-decent social media presence, so there IS a way I could get at least some eyes on it, if I did this.

Social Media marketing is the way to go, Gary Vaynerchuk's book Crushing It!: goes into detail about that. And ya I made 20k off GME so I feel lucky.
