I lay them open on the coffee table, if they are door stoppers I hang one half off the table so the book is open 90°.

I typically only read mass market paperbacks bought second hand. On the rare occasion I get a nice hardback I use a business card or similar.

I used to use note cards, they were useful for the odd note as well. But then i got in the habit of taking notes on my bookmark and once it was filled up or I wanted to leave it on a page for later reference I would grab another note card to start new. Problem was that note cards are thick and once you have a dozen or so in the book it no longer shuts properly and they all fall out. I switched to the paper for shoji screens, it is very tough and very thin, works great and the asian market sells small notepads of it for dirt cheap.

I just use a scrap of paper. I write notes on the paper as I go. Once the paper is filled I leave it in the book and get a new one. Using playing cards is actually pretty cool. But if I saw someone in person dog ear a book, I'd think less of them.
