my elitist mother never let me watch anything but the news. she never let me listen to any music that she thought didn't make any sense, i was bound to fucking art rock, folk song and singer-songwriter shit. she always and still is devotedly liberal, though. let the other suffer is what she said when she tortured me.
in my 20s i discovered conan and I like him a lot. also i discovered porn. it was better than all the platonic semantics or the dreary slow-modem-connection style sex allusions of baudelaire; it was better than the christian love drivel going on between the repentant inconnue whores and equally repentant angreh Nietzscheans of M.D.Fyodor. It was better than all of Kafka's attempts at that "how the fuck does it work???"-feel-show-don't-tell;
but worst of all, lit, was that now I couldn't start a relationship with anyone outside of a thightly knit circle of teachers, preachers, politicians and their kids.
in came to be illiterate in popular culture. and now I devour games and porn and action cinema. and i don't even attach it to any of the aestheticist bullshit i've learnt. i just devour it in a post-ironic fashion and to regain what've missed. to become a modern day erudite adept at modern oratory.
and now I wonder: what, /LIT/, brings you here? what is your background? why do you read? why don't you play vidya? why don't you bate? why don't you listen to debilitating muzzack?

That is a rather odd question OP, inasmuch as it preempts one's answers. I'll answer it anyway:

I was born into a middle-upper class academic family. My father is a distinguished professor and a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), and the Royal Society (NZ). Most of my relatives are doctors or lawyers. I grew up immersed in high culture. I had a thirst for knowledge and absorbed it all osmotically.

I was highly eccentric even as a child. My parents nicknamed me 'Lord Prong' because I was an arrogant little elitist shit-head. This, and my lack of sporting ability, exiled me to the 'nerd' clique all the way through high-school.

As a result, I found out about 4chan in about 06, prior to which I was already heavily immersed in internet culture. Spent a large amount of time looking at porn, being a script kiddie, playing vidya etc.

When I went to university, I was finally in a forum that appreciates people like me, and I became a social butterfly. Spent about three years dabbling in all sorts of drugs, partying my ass off.

What brings me here currently? I enjoy literature. I browse 4chan. Naturally I would be here. Why do I read? Because I enjoy it immensely. Why don't I play vidya? Because I honestly think video games are for children and socially regressive teens. Why don't I bate? I do bate, often and to all sorts of weird shit. I have no idea what debilitating muzzack is, but I listen to an absurdly wide range of music. After literature, music is what I most enjoy.

I think that's fairly comprehensive.

>what, /LIT/, brings you here?

I kinda like slow boards and /lit/ is the only slow board besides /an/ that actually interests me as far as the topics are concerned.

>what is your background?

Small town punk nerd turned liberal arts major. Spent all of my pocket money on fantasy, SF, horror and pulp novels, SNES cartridges and RPGs when i was in my early teens, soon got into literary classics along with that, though.
Picked up a large share of comics knowledge from my brother, who is a collector of superhero comics and wrestling videos to this day.
.
>why do you read?

I actually enjoy the kind of literature you find boring and am bored now by the novels you enjoy, which i loved to read when i was younger. I just find complexity fascinating, can't help it. I don't mind if others don't get it, though, i'm very aware it's a kinda eccentric taste.
Nothing wrong if anyone likes reading pulp, either. Literary taste is overrated anyway, iterature isn't better than any other medium, just different.

>why don't you play vidya? why don't you bate? why don't you listen to debilitating muzzack?

I'm more into p&p RPGs than vidja, particularly Shadowrun, but i still love my old SNES games.
Porn is fine with me as well and most of the music i listen to is still pretty debilitating. Still love punk and hardcore. Have found a huge love for minimal techno, am really into abnormal, distorted basses and every kind of noise that's primal, rough and makes me lose myself, both when it comes to listening to and making music.
I also love to play jazz, though, it's fun to improvise and i like the swing it has.
Being completely obsessed with popular culture also doesn't stop me from liking Dostoyevski, Mann, Pynchon, de Lillo, Bernhardt, Kafka or Arno Schmidt.
I see no contradiction in that.

Your mother is a fiendish subape of the lowest order, teaching you that suffering is the key to enlightenment, that the debasement of your own joys and desires, your dreams and abilities is a good thing. It is not. It is an evil thing. It kills.

There once lived a great woman who taught us that we don't have to suffer, that we can take control of our own lives, using our own brains and hard work to create our own happiness. She taught us that the mind of man is a limitless wonder chamber capable of conquering and completely subduing the world around us.

Was this woman placed on a pedestal? Was she heralded as a prophetess and a sage? NO! Her name was dragged through the mud and she faced down heaps of derision and scorn that would've withered countless many less confident (and less correct) personages. She was lampooned by those creatures that would have you in chains, those politicians and intellectuals whose method is brute force and whose goal is universal annihilation. Her name is even reviled on this very forum by those who fear her. They teach us that nothing is anything. She taught us that everything is something.

Who is she?

GOT NONE, BUT I'M GOING DOWN TO SEE MUM AND DAD THIS WEEKEND, SHE MIGHT HAVE SOME DANISH COOKIES ON HAND.

I LOVE BEING TALL.

OTHER TALL FAGS, WHEN YOU SEE OTHER GUYS AROUND YOUR HEIGHT, DO YOU TRY TO DETERMINE IF YOU'RE TALLER OR NOT THAN THEM AND BE SAD IF THEY WIN? MY OTHER FRIENDS THAT ARE TALL SAID THEY DO IT TOO, I THOUGHT IT WAS OCD OR SOMETHING

Our society has taught women to think they're independent, but this is a fallacy because women can't even think logically. Females are supposed to be submissive and rely on their man to take care of them. Things are still like this in some middle eastern countries, their women aren't even allowed outside unless their man in with them. They basically stay home to cook, clean and take care of the kids all day. This is how it should be, but our society calls that sexist. It's not sexist, it's just gender roles.

WHAT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA.

BEING IN A BAR DRUNK OVERSEAS, LOOKING LIKE A SPOILED WHITE KID AND WITH THREE BLACK GUYS AND THE DISCUSSION SOMEHOW GOES TO AFRICA'S INDEPENDENCE. ANY INCLINATION OF UNDERSTANDING FOR THE 'WHITE MAN'S' ACTIONS DURING AND AFTER COLONISATION IS NOT A GOOD IDEA, WHEN TWO ARE FROM CONGO AND ONE FROM SUDAN, ONLY THE SUDANESE GUY WAS SKINNY.

> what brings you here?
because my room mates are out and I like reading the many e-penis wars waged by the conceited and pedantic ( /lit/, /int/ and /g/ ) every now and then.

> what is your background?
I'm a Balto-Slav, I've been in Edinburgh atm.

> why do you read?
I don't know too well myself. Must find it 'entertaining'.

> why don't you play vidya?
I still do, just not so much as of late.

> why don't you bate?
Christian. On rehab.

> why don't you listen to debilitating muzzack?
What is "debilitating muzzack" to you?
