>want to get into a field
>a million introduction books, each one of which espouses radically different positions because of how divisive the field is
>even more books for the specialists because the field is so large and has been studied for hundreds if not thousands of years
>on top of all this you need to have expertise in 10+ languages or youre ngmi
i give up being an autodidact

As a fellow autodidact my advice is to look up the syllabus and the recommended readings of the course that has something in common with what you're interested in at some prestigious university. MIT Open Courseware is great for that. Please don't be intimidated by the field. You don't have to read all the introductions, I bet you know basic precalculus math but you haven't read all the precalculus books in existence right? Just pick one and see how you like it

You do not want to ”get into a field” you want to follow your instincts and branch out from your interests. This is the OG way. Peace.
