I sort of like how your chart lets writers slip across time periods, but for man vs tech I think DFW is wrong. His book is much more man vs self using pomo techniques. Maybe DeLillo? Or Ballard's Crash? And while obviously Cervantes is foundational, Tristram Shandy is more tangibly pomo in feel.

You're right, this isn't about the English language. You don't understand that the dates the books were written is irrelevant to the conflict in the book. Lots of the examples in this thread could be multiple squares, so I don't know how useful these charts are in the first place. I'd rather see an example of every conflict from every era.

This has to be right, otherwise it would become impossible to write about man vs nature, which it clearly isn't (in fact it's more likely to be an explicit theme in modern books than classical ones).
