I've only read Outlaws of the Marsh and it's kino.
OOTM, Journey to the West, and Three Kingdoms are in the realm of war and mythology/fantasy. Dream of the Red Chamber is about social drama.

Based. Thanks for such an in depth response. Been thinking about grabbing the penguin lu xun book and dream of the red chamber, but red chamber is a million fucking volumes and written by two people so im wary.
Lao she sounds decent from what i know as well.

I like Journey of the West the best, but only because I've read it in high school.

Strange, most people don't have that experience in highschool classes

I meant I read it for myself at age 15. School curriculum was making me read 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. Journey to the West was easy to read, even as a teen, because of its episodic structure and high levels of comedy.
