Post your opinions about Zeno's Conscience, one of Italo Svevo's masterpieces. What I personally like is that Zeno is an "unreliable narrator" and makes excuses for everything he does wrong.

I’ve been interested in this for a while but have never bought it. Can you shed some light on it? I think it’s a shame so many great writers from the 20th century are falling into obscurity

Zeno is his best and even it isn't that good

The book itself is alright, but to get the best out of it you'd also need to read a book analysis (or do it yourself)

Should I actually read this? I picked up a copy a while ago but when I read the first few pages it seemed too much like Portnoy's Complaint, which I found tedious.

I liked it, but I feel that Giuseppe Berto's Incubus (Il male oscuro) which was inspired by this work, despite the fact that it hasn't the "unreliable narrator" thing, is more interesting. It's an aubiography of a schizoid man so should satisfy the tastes of many here.

Zeno is the best, but I liked also "As a man grows older"

That would be Rodolfo Wilcock more than Svevo

It's on my reading list, I just find it surprising to see an obscure book even for Italy mentioned here

I just read it recently, that's why I wanted to make a thread about it

Yeah it's somewhat obscure but sometimes here on /Lit/ you can find even books like these, if you ignore the dozen of threads about Joyce, Melville, Evola, Nietzsche, Guenon, etc.
Anyway except for a few boring part I found that book really interesting and even funny in a lot of parts. It's kinda surreal sometimes
