I think big part of the reason why reading is unpopular with the youth is because of the "old" feel attached to it. Literature is almost antithetical to young people, specially if we're talking about underages rather than legal adults.
With TV and Videogames most would just pick up the recent, most popular stuff, but with literature that's harder to do since the most recommended works are decades old, while good books from more recent decades are harder to find.

And most literature is also made for adults, by adults, and dealing with topics of the lives of the middle-aged. Really, what business could the average 14 year old, lacking in life experience - who obviously isn't allowed to do most adult stuff like drive a car, work in a job, enter a stripclub, fight in a war, or even just go out on the streets on his own these days - have reading something like The Great Gatsby, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Notes from Underground, or most non-fiction?
