The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl also fits the bill, since it's loosely connected to Tatami Galaxy, at least the anime.

There is also The Eccentric Family, also an anime adaptation of another of the author's books. You can kinda tell it's based on a book due to the pacing, exposition and introduction to characters being very novel-like, in a way I thought doesn't always translate well to an animated medium.

I never got animes apeal. It just seems like intellectual slop for the masses to suck up. Theres very few that actually take advantage of the potential of the medium or even its seemingly neverending following. I personally think anime was meant as a way for japan to teach its youth the value of civil service and camaraderie but became out of hand (see 90% of animes revolving around a young group of friends overcoming overwhelming odds via the power of friendship) That being said there are some I enjoyed which go beyond that

Miyazaki and Takahata are genuinely good at what they do, no amount of popularity will change that. Very few films can match the beauty of something like Princess Kaguya and even fewer movies, animated or live action, manage to imbue their characters with life like Miyazaki does. Trite is the last word I would use to describe him, in fact his genius lies in his restraint, subtlety and quietude.

Here is some anime that is actually ABOUT literature to some degree.
>Senryuu Shoujo: A teenage girl communicates by writing poems, romance ensues with a "delinquent" type guy who is inspired to start writing poems as well.
>After the Rain: Teen girl falls for a much older man who writes, and his love of literature is an integral part of the plot and shapes his relationship with the girl.
>Chihayafuru: High schoolers playing a card game called karuta which is based on ancient Japanese poetry.
>Hyouka: The arc that the anime is named after is based on a mystery stemming from a story written by a relative of one of the characters. Source material is a series of mystery novels.
>I want to eat your pancreas: A diary written by one of the main characters is an important part of the story.
>Whisper of the Heart: A young girl dreams of being a writer and is working on a story.

Did we watch the same ending? Although it's brushed aside quickly, Peco succeeds by magic and sheer will without any repercussion, which undermines the nicely grounded story beforehand. As a result, I find the core theme delivered in the climax cheesy.

I always thought of Peco as of deuteragonist since the narrative was centered on Smile most of the time. And I don't think that Peco succeeded by sheer will--it was clearly shown that Smile decided to yield the victory to Peco (despite his clear advantage because of Peco's injury), since he realized that it is the friends he made along the way was what mattered to him the most, not the goal of becoming a champion. He even throws away his rocket in the end, I think.

the second arc is top tier until the finale where we have the "muh power of friendship" bullshit
the third arc is top tier until the finale in which there's a major asspull as well as the negation of a specific character's death (which makes all the emotional power of the scene useless)
the fourth arc is rushed and doesn't have a proper ending (this is the same case as in the manga which the anime is adapting)
it's worth watching for the character cast and the first 2/3rds of the second and third arc

Why are there people here who enjoy anime? I get told on places like /a/ that if you want a good story you should just read a book and post about it on /lit/ instead of complaining about a poorly told story in an anime. Is it possible to want a good story out of books AND anime?

You're missing out on poets fighting at the top of mount purgatory to become wed to beatrice and ascend to the kingdom of heaven and faustian alchemists goaded by lucifer to attain eternity in the temporal world using human sacrifice

hm? You seem confused...anime is simply another form of media. It's just like a book, movie, or visual art..it can be good or bad. Just like how a film could be a masterpiece or a piece of shit marvel movie

This is the only correct answer. Everyone else is just posting anime they think are good because they think "/lit/" = good, but this anime is "/lit/" in the truest sense of the word.

>> No.18089742

>>18089518
I didn't think it was THAT bad. The soundtrack was ok. Some of the animation was ok. The voice acting was fine.

Every CGI monster looks like absolute shit, which was like 50% of the monsters, so you kind of have a point. Kind of hard to have a horror show when you're fucking laughing at the monsters and ghosts.

It was faithful to the material without cutting anything though, and the one addition, the hound master, was on keeping with the show and not out of place.

Obviously it sucks though because now we won't get a real one, and they skipped The Lost Children.
