This how Reddit thinks books work.

People on /a/ unironically make this argument and it drives me nuts.

Why would you even want to write a book about a sexist? You're obviously hiding something

I don't know, I never think about the author when reading, he might as well be nonexistent.

This is equally wrong

>> No.18080477

It's right to an extent. Having a "morally bad" or "villanous" character frees the writer up to get away with saying controversial or politically incorrect things he otherwise could not say. And if questioned, he could just say "That was the character who said that shit about the Jews, not me." It's actually a brilliant loophole.

I'm not judging.

Why not read a book about a sexist?

No. But I would like the author to examine the idea if he raises the issue, and not just throwing it out there for no reason.

>> No.18080730

Then what sense would characters arguing conflicting viewpoints make? Their books have the authors opinions scattered throughout in different ways, but not necessarily blatantly verbatim in character dialog

Well the character in Mein Kampf was absolutely insane and quite hateful towards Jews and others when we all know Hitler was in fact a very warm and receptive man to people of all walks of life.

Wow, Virginia Woolf must've really hated women going off what her characters said in To the Lighthouse.
