Plus there is the interesting stuff you find on them if the previous owner just deleted/formatted everything. I recently ran a used HDD that I had bought on ebay through Recuva and found out every fucking thing about that guy - his job applications with a complete CV, testimonials from former employers, data sheets from all the firms he is doing book keeping for, the document that declares him an officially ordained priest of Jehova's Witnesses ... it was wild, and that was less than 1% of what I have found so far. 750GB take a shit ton of time though, I am not going to spend four whole days on this.

I just am not interested in the setting of fantasy, the worlds are so obnoxious most of the time, looking backwards at bad history and very stale tropes, I feel like the fantasy field never tries to be real. I have read a lot of YA shit in my days. But Sci fi is usually looking hard at the contemporary or future, leads to cooler and more useful stories, more variety all that is imo. But it is different enough from fantasy in too many ways to reconcile when you need to dig deep and work or read with those types of texts a lot.

So given a lack of anything to read recently, I picked this up, Alien: Cold Forge. A spin off of the movies. This book legitimately surprised me with its quality. There's a lot of tension here, not so much because of the Aliens themselves funnily enough, but the environments. The story is set on a cover research facility hidden in the radiation bloom of a sun. The parts that really stood out to me were a couple of space walk scenes, the author really managed to get across the pants shitting terror of crossing the void with literally nothing to hold you to the station but your own hands. I don't know, maybe it's just me but the concept of being outside in space with no tether terrifies me.
The characters were also interesting, because there's no real good guys. The primary viewpoint character is a psychpathic corporate hatchet man who has been sent to audit the facility and cut costs, this immediately puts him at odds with the rest of the cast. He's very believable as the sort of conniving, backstabbing corporate ladder climber everyone hates, but he's portrayed well enough that it's understandable how some of the other characters end up trusting him, with his seemingly altruistic outward actions contrasted with his internal monologue.

It kind of slipped a bit towards the end, characters started to veer towards the cartoony, but I still enjoyed it a lot surprisingly. Much better than most of the movies, that's for sure.

I've noticed this question in a few places over the years. Why are people so enamored with Lizardfolk? I can understand finding them cool, but as far as I can tell there's no much in the cultural consciousness that I feel would foster such an interest. I'd understand if for instance, people found *rat folk* cool, as there's plenty of modern series, and plenty of folk lore that deal with rodents to the extent that I think people would get an interest. But besides snakes, I can't think of any other main line series with lizard folk.

I'll be honest and say that while GW has produced some stupid shit in their 40k and new fantasy setting, Warhammer Fantasy is probably the most original and indeed even the BEST "modern" fantasy setting out there today. So many other settings try so hard to be Fantasy but different or "realistic" (cynical) where as Warhammer Fantasy embraces its tropes and makes something distinct.

Fiction that adheres to genre can never be taken seriously, and any author that tries will fail and make something laughably adolescent like GoT or The Kingkiller Chronicles. An author that embraces the limitations will come away with a product no more serious, but much more entertaining.

I think it's interesting how Warhammer is the only big commercial fantasy/scifi franchise that routinely invents brand new casts of characters for new works, and the fanbase never even remarks upon it. There's not even any of the reluctant shoring-up you see in the other corporate settings when they try to bring in a new cast, where you have to bring in Boba Fett or Commander Riker or whoever in for a supporting role to persuade the audience that this is still the thing they like. Since it started as a wargame all the fandom is rooted in appreciation for factions and archetypes, which can be fitted to new characters as the story demands.

I think that and the ridiculous scale of the setting are what's given the franchise such a long shelf life. Warhammer is like thirty years old and I don't see nearly the same amount of cynicism about it as I do for franchises that have been around for half that.

Any sci fi like Alien or set in that universe that is any good?

>> No.18059656

Was checking out the Goodreads
>And this book is reliable; it sticks to formula 95%, but---
>Probably the largest problem I have with this book is the extreme pandering to the Identity-Politics demographic, for the simple reason that such things have never existed in the Alien universe (as far as I'm aware) and it feels completely out of place. The lead character of this story is the ultimate in Minority points, a black lesbian cripple with gender dysphoria whose main enemy is a straight white man (Oh noes!), and the main problem here is that she's a shitty person, nearly as shitty as the chief antagonist, but we're supposed to sympathize with her for no reason. Or, more likely, we're supposed to sympathize because she's a black lesbian cripple with gender dysphoria whose main enemy is a straight white man, and ignore that she's a thief, endangers others, morally inconsistent, grossly self-centered, and is generally unlikable.
>I honestly could not figure out the purpose of this character, repeatedly thought (and reallllly hoped) that she was a red-herring before the actual Hero/Heroine appeared, but every time I thought that the author was going to make a radical move towards her and address her awfulness in a meaningful way he backs off and it doesn't pay out, especially when it comes to this series.

If you squint your eyes and turn your head sideways sure. Blue is a black cripple who might be a lesbian (or might not be depending on her motivations) if you wanted to be extremely reductive, but she's not in any way intended to be sympathetic or the protagonist. She's ruthless and self centered and knowingly puts everyone in danger for her own gain.

Politically speaking most SJW types would call me literally hitler, but I didn't really get much by way of IDpol vibes from the book. There's only one legitimately "good" character in the book and he's a straight white australian. Keep in mind the entire cast is Weyland Yutani employees, who are evil almost by definition.

Jeff Noon did something like that with Vurt, but with drugs creating a virtual reality, melding the two concepts. The symbolism was stronger than druggie fiction, bordering avatar and icon sorts of levels of symbols. I think you could cut the drugs out of the picture and go straight to cyber, basically taking Gibson style deck cowboys to the next level, where their reality is simply blurred with virtual reality due to overexposure, possibly due to implant effects on how they experience the virtual reality, or a more simplified version of overuse.

Anyone read this torture?

I'm 770 pages into book three. Seems ridiculous to quit at this point but the last 100 pages have been torture and I can barely understand a thing. And the thought of trudging through 400 more pages of this!

I've enjoyed it overall but the story has completely fallen off track.

And the picture on the cover of The Naked God, as at page 770 that thing is only addressed for about one page. Horribly false advertising.

Fiction isn't a genre. Genre apologists always do this: They can't think of any good genre works so they extend the definition to include all of human literature. They pick up Macbeth and call it fantasy because it has a ghost, or cite that one greek book as a sci-fi novel. Yawn.

I'm reading Stand on Zanzibar right now and I had forgotten how much I hate this "cynical but insightful observer of the human condition" archetype (Chad Mulligan). It always feels giga cringe because I can't help but see it as the writer treating the character as a mouthpiece for his own views and then having his characters fellate him and praise him for his brilliance. It's just so pathetic.

I know I've seen it in other places too but the only other example I can think of off the top of my head is Spider Jerusalem from Transmetropolitan.
