Anime in written form, which is why so many people love it. An uncomplicated, straightforward style (an amalgamation of worst of Orwell and Hemingway), fast-moving plots ripped straight from the screenplays of summer blockbusters, shallow wisecracking characters perfect for turning into funko pops or slapping onto merchandise, a sterile scientific approach to magic that satisfies the autist STEMtards, and the ability to pump out these massive doorstoppers at an amazing rate compared to his contemporaries.

>What Are Sanderson’s Laws Of Magic?
>Sanderson’s First Law of Magics: An author’s ability to solve conflict with magic is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to how well the reader understands said magic.
>Sanderson’s Second Law can be written very simply. It goes like this: Limitations > Powers
(Or, if you want to write it in clever electrical notation, you could say it this way: Ω > |
though that would probably drive a scientist crazy.)
>The third law is as follows: Expand what you already have before you add something new.

is it that bad if he wants his magic to have clear rules and limits?

What's the point then? It's like someone wants to write sci-fi but in quasi European middle ages setting.

I do think the author should know the rules of their world but not keeping magic mysterious for the reader just takes away from it.

if a magic system is vague, i start asking questions. call me autistic, but it can take me out of a story if i start asking myself "couldn't he have just done this and won? why didn't he do that other thing?". i guess it's not mutually exclusive, but usually i find it one way or the other

>> No.18032085

Honestly he does have a bit of a point.
It becomes less interesting to read a magical character if *anything* can happen.
That doesn't mean magic has to be described in perfect mathematical formulas, just that if there are certain things you know a character can't do, overcoming obstacles becomes more interesting.

Man read the book before you critique it. It's nothing like Orwell or Hemingway, he writes in the most pulpy style - image adjective image repeat. But that does not mean it's bad, guy writes satisfying really fun to read stories for children.

>> No.18032138

I hate him because his books are soulless and mass produced genre trash. There is no point from them, you do not gain anything from them, they are not art. Reading Sanderson is like playing a vibeogame or watching abengers, it’s a waste of time and life, it’s worthless consumerism. Also his books look so fucking retarded, the covers remind me of YA shit I read in middle school, embarrassing for an adult to like any of it.

>"couldn't he have just done this and won? why didn't he do that other thing?
Couldn't a decent writer still answer these without giving you the guide book? The fact that it's more challenging seems another point against the easy mode of "well, obviously he couldn't blast the door, he only has +20 destruction and couldn't get the +5 buff".

Besides, even if you know all the details, if the problem is complex enough, the characters are bound to make decisions that don't seem optimal.
>>18032085
Not even a fan of him but didn't Tolkien solved that pretty well? It seemed obvious from the start that having a wizard on the team, didn't mean they could do some crazy thing. Even the resurrection felt consistent with the tone of the world.

Is it though? I tried to go through the free pages of Misborn and it didn't have the spark anime usually has but felt more like a Marvel work, when everything is calculated for a Burger audience.

>> No.18032358

Never read him. I can judge a book by its cover, and I judge him to write thick fantasy books pandering to the comic/superhero movie audience.

I did watch some of his lectures on youtube. He knows his craft, which is how to write a book that sells, however vapid it is.

>Anime in written form
This seems to be the most common consensus. I also described it in these exact words when I was recommending it to a kid. As >>18032105 this anon has said, he writes stories that are easy to digest and provide a fun premise. It's not necessarily bad but it's not good either. I recognize and agree with most of your points. I think this is also the reason why Reddit absolutely adores this guy.

What gets to people about sanberblob is that he embodies the dry sexless Redditor art-as-a-science formulae vibe. Armies of beta readers and editors, legions of uncritical fans all working in unison to make *the thing we like but more*. An average author elevated far above what a fairer world would allow and an avatar of incurious geek culture. His work represents a lot of what is alienating and depressing about modernity but is too vast and safe to ever spark real flames of anger so most people are left with a vague hard to place dislike of him. Also he’s fat.
