I am in grad school getting an MS in Business Information Technology but one of my classes this quarter mainly consists of building a wordpress website and creating content for it. I am using this as an opportunity to create a literary site and will write about literature. In theory the site is to be a cross between a social media platform, a blog, and a niche news/opinion site and hypothetically it the content would be user generated where you submit /lit/ opinion pieces and essays and articles for others to read.

No I am not content with my choice 80% of my classes were more like political science shit and I only enjoyed classical lit from the 19th century and 1500's. I would not recommend studying English literature. I'm going to law school to further my discontent now because I don't have other options.

Economics is a science. You have to learn the toolkit to analyse problems before you can engage in meaningful discourse. Theories are worthless unless they are supported by empirical evidence. The models need to be mathematical so that they are testable empirically. In undergraduate, you are just acquiring the basic toolkit. You learn the most important economic models, the maths behind them, you learn to manipulate them mathematically to get a desired expression and work out effects of comparative statics. You learn all the statistics you need to understand how to analyse and interpret data and perform regressions with OLS. It's a science and you won't be able to even engage with the highest level material if you don't acquire the toolkit to a high degree of understanding

>> No.18028942

>Economics
>Science
Economics is as much a science as sociology is a science, don't kid yourself. Trying to cope your way into telling others that econometrics is anything more than the misapplication of actual statistical methods doesn't make it a science either.

If you'd ever studied mathematics in any serious capacity you'd realize what a naive opinion this is. People who are too stupid to understand statistics think its a meaningful metric to use for forming opinions but people who actually understand statistics understand that it's an elaborate tool for tricking the uninitiated into thinking that your personal opinions are gospel.

Studying Philosophy and Fine Art (as in, making art). The uni specialises in the continental traditions ... Overall it's great; there's under 20 other students on the course in a given year, so we've developed a close community, even under covid.

This year the philosophy dept. shifted significantly towards philosophy of technology and information, and post-Kantian thinkers. The lecturers seem to be close to the cutting edge of their disciplines.

In addition to ordinary essay writing for assessment, we can also respond with practical (art) projects and an extended commentary. It's pretty wild.

I'm doing a Master's degree in Information Technology. I went in this field part because of the employability and potential salaries it provides, but I'm more and more disgusted by the pointlessness of it, and realised that wasting my life as a wagecuck sucks. I don't know what to do with my life, so when I'll be out of college I will maybe work for some months and then get back to study an actually interesting subject, like philosophy.

That's why you need to study it so you can understand its limitations. And just because it has limitations does not mean it is worthless. It is the only method we have to try and observe empirical reality in social science. Theories are worthless on their own. Economics is a science. Less scientific than the natural sciences, but it is still a science. And it is considerably more scientific than any of the other social sciences. It's not misapplying statistical methods. We are using them for what they are intended. We test hypotheses and try to observe causal patterns which lead us to reject or accept our theories as plausible. Without that, you can't make any judgement on which theories are better

I'm kinda satisfied. I finished my master's last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Currently working on a PhD proposal which, if I find the passion for, I will probably enjoy too. On the other hand I can't find work. I do freelance editing and writing but despite being very good at both I can't get any fucking work. I don't try enough because I'm a richfg and make enough money on the stock market not to worry. But I wish I had more structured and productive ways to spend my days. I might do a second masters in editing or some other field more closely tailored to looking good on my CV. The main point I'd like to share with anyone on 4chan considering studying lit is don't buy into the memes about everything being pozzed. It isn't, even in the United States where I did my bachelors. Sure, social justice and critical theory are the current dominant lenses through which literature is assessed in the academy, but that doesn't mean you're required to use this lens People who dismiss higher education out of hand for political reasons are midwits or worse.
