Japanese asceticism makes some good arguments. I recommend Hojoki and The Narrow Road to the Interior. (Sam Hamill's translation is incredible.)

Mishima's Sun and Steel might work tangentially, though it's mostly about improving one's body. I consider those pursuits to be anti-consumerist though.

Why the fuck? Most people pursue this by purchasing membership in a gym, purchasing bodybuilding powders and then utilizing the newly shaped body to pose on social media for upboats. Ultimately its desirable, because it makes you strong, virile and healthy, but its an extremely commericaliazed field.
