Nonsense. The narrator sits and tells of places he’s been.

A lot of it is engaging but I'm not convinced Herodotus visited many of the places he talked about. I don't even think he pretends to have visited. He's at his most engaging when he talks about leaders and the stories surrounding them. Then he adds his own folktales and speculation on life and culture in Scythia and Libya and the like and goes off the rails talking about flying snakes and how Ethiopian ejaculate is black.

Reveries of the Solitary Walker, by Jean Jacques Rousseau isn't only the story of Rousseau walking, but he also talks about the philosophy behind walking and the virtues of walking.

Of course Anabasis, which literally translated means "the long uphill walk" , is another classic. Ten thousand soldiers walk ten thousand miles through enemy territory, then they walk back again taking a longer but more scenic route to reach their home. Sometimes they walk across mountains, sometimes they walk across rivers, and even when people try to stop them they don't stop walking. You'll hold your breath the whole time.

The Long March by Sun Shuyun is another book about walking and its consequences. It's the true story of how Chinese communist forces walked for 6000 miles and created the modern state of China.

Came here to say this. I tried to read it for a paper in High School but found it miserably boring by the third chapter. Ended up writing a paper about how McCarthy writes in a way to make you really FEEL hopeless and miserable so you can relate to the characters and wound up impressing my Lit teacher and getting an A.

The Road is a cash in and doesn't represent McCarthy's literary achievements. But he wanted some easy money and had an idea he could churn out pretty quickly.
