I remember joining 4chan when it first started. My brother was an SA goon. It was less overtly toxic than it is now, more creative I think, but still super shitty. I think young men join these sorts of boards because childhood gives you this general sense you're being lied to, so you want to find out what's Real, and if you're a dude, particularly a mentally ill dude, it's very intuitive to think that the darkest, ugliest things are real. Then you soak in it so much that you forget how insane and toxic this place is. It's like how fish don't question water.

I'll disagree with a majority of this thread and say I came to 4chan because it was a place I could find unfiltered thoughts and opinions they occasionally mirrored my own. Negative influence? Unlike the extremist woke children on TikTok who doxx people at the mere questioning of leftist ideology? I came here when I was 15/16, but honestly 4chan made me grow. If I didn't come here I would continue lurking my national imageboard, which is much more hardcore. ISIS videos, killing animals and weird porn and discussions about drugs is a standard there, and additionally a few times a year there are organized "happenings" like stalking people (also mentally ill people) and harassing them for fun, or other shit like that.
I was lurking it for about a year when I was 15 and I thought 4chan is the same, but in English, but slowly I noticed that the culture is much different and that nobody even cares when someone posts their face here. Also women are allowed.
So yeah, this place made me grow, especially boards like /g/, /mu/, /sci/ and /lit/.

This. 4chan is obviously varied and not uniform, but when you go on boards like /mu/ or /sci/ or /lit/, there is a higher density of geniuses on 4chan than any other site on the internet. Why? Unfiltered information is narcotics for intelligent people, and though many do get consumed in the bowels of b and pol, the aforementioned are unique in that they're pure. Goodreads has its place, but it's just simply too nice for internet communication. What makes 4chan addicting is when you read something insanely offensive or shocking, like COVID19 is fake, or women are children, or realities of the BLM riots vs news narrative, you really can't unsee the matrix. Also, the toxicity is only bad if you give in, just turn the other cheek and forgive the bitter person. The book recommendations on /lit/ are generally better than professors or any qualified ranking. That being said, I'm here to stay for a little while.

And it's a point lost on many of the idiots here. The fact that posters attempt vainglorious efforts to vanguard "board culture" is not what has made the site work, and in fact has generally failed to ever protect site culture whenever used. The fact that you can massage your fragile ego and frustrations by making a dismissive response or unsubstantial post is not why the site works, and really does nothing for the board culture except make it a bigger time waster. I'm fairly successful, have a wife and two kids. I found this place at 16 years in 2006 and have enjoyed a b pol news lit his and mostly k. Now I mostly visit his and lit, I am in an ex-/k/ group that's nice for k stuff since k is mostly inane and gun culture at large has a "too poor to be a car guy" selection factor to it.

I used to work with aircraft mechanics and liked them as peole In the sense they were more grounded normies that shared a decent amount of values with me even if I was not as brutish and worked avionics. Now I work with IT types of people who are total redditors and almost completely unrelatable, though at least smarter. It's absolutely enraging to hear redditors discuss anything as they invariably appeal to authority or consensus values when I rarely press them on an issue they bring up.

Some of the best laughs I've had came from stupid 4chan shitposting but there is a certain point where online places in general weigh ruminating more heavily than they should over being individuals of actual action. Having some quiet time to think about your direction is important but there's only so much time in the day and people benefit greatly from focused work or building skills. I think 4chan for one reason or another seems to always be on the leading edge of some things about the culture of the english-speaking world before it starts to manifest in other places as well, that's also one of its major attractions.

I've been coming to this site about since I was 20. I'm 34 now.

I think this site keeps me sharp and on my toes. I can relate to many of my fellow Millennials/Boomers, I can get along with them, but I sometimes feel a bit shocked at how disconnected, out of touch, and susceptible to, frankly, social engineering they are. They love fucking Marvel movies, for God's sake, even /co/, the comic book board, knows those are trash. This site has acted as a kind of counter-conditioning for most of my adult life and it also helps me discern what's true and what's false.

/lit/, particularly, has been immensely valuable to me. I have been coming to this board since its beginnings. It helped me discover Borges, Gene Wolfe, Pessoa, Spenser, so many genuinely great writers that my American public school and university education would not have exposed me to. It has helped motivate me to become a good writer and a good poet. It exposed me to the earliest days of dissident and unpopular political thought, on both the left and the right, and it is still good for picking up things on the forefront of politics and culture.

I even got my very first short story published in a /lit/ magazine. I've now had multiple short stories and multiple poems published. I am working on a substantial work which I hope /lit/ likes, a work which I have been planning almost as long as I have been coming to 4chan.

I don't know about anyone else, but this site, for me, has immense value. I will cherish it always, and if it ever goes away I'll miss it greatly.
