1. Read more. 2. Read dictionaries. There are several types, etymological ones can be useful. You could also look at dictionaries of slang such as urbandictionary.com, or neologisms. Also, check out samuel Johnson's dictionary, its its beautifully crafted.

Write the words you don't understand/find interesting as you are reading in a notebook. Then, every once in a while, write a poem(that rhymes) using as many of those words as you possibly can. Try making a good poem with a good rhythm. I don't know how to explain it, but the poems I write usually stay in my head for longer, and sometimes just by taking a long time to write them you memorize them without even trying.

I discovered this "method" accidentally and it really works. I learned a lot of Italian vocabulary by just listening to Fabrizio De André's songs, which goes to show you how poetry works differently in your brain.
