to give an example, a fantasy series I was reading recently was Battlemage, it has feminist ideas that shouldn't exist in its time period or setting. One of the main characters, a princess, wonders why women arent dont serve in the army despite being half the population, and that if women were trained like men, then they would be able to keep up with men thus doubling the size of the army.

This completely disregards the fact that if women were in the army, then nobody would be raising or having kids thus destroying your population though. And of course she becomes the queen later.

This completely disregards the fact there wasn't a standing army historically anyways and you're picking and choosing what you're allowed to be autistic about because you hate women.

>if women were in the army, then nobody would be raising or having kids
The opposite would be true, though. Every single one of them would be pregnant before the first deployment.
Come to think of it, having mandatory conscription for females is probably the best way to achieve unprecedentedly high birthrates.

>> No.17994236

>>17993991
The reason people laugh at you is because you immediately turn this into politics and don't even try to attempt to understand the reasoning.

>if women were in the army, then nobody would be raising or having kids thus destroying your population though.
This assumes.
1. ALL women are going to war
2. Every woman is wed and breeding children 24/7
3. That its perfectly fine for ALL men to go to war and die
4. That is somehow acceptable or practical that a few old and feeble men can "breed" and entire village of women, that all the women would be okay with this, that the village can function with nothing but pregnant women providing for themselves and the lack of 50% of their able bodied adult population wouldn't result in their likely and soon demise. or that the lack of genetic diversity won't quickly ruin them.
5. That armies fight to annihilation resulting in the death of everyone in them. When in fact this is an extremely rare occurrence.
6. That women can't be providing magical support roles while still "bearing" children.
7. That its impossible for men to raise children once given them. (a 30 year old woman could have produced 10 kids, left them with her husband tilling the fields, and then went off to war. in your hypothetical world this means he can continue breeding with other young woman if the wife dies. if the husband dies the wife is soon to be a barren womb who can't continue the bloodline)

And so on.
You're laughable because you don't consider any other arguments or ideas and instead just regurgitate the same ol' bait you've seen 1000 times. And instead of just moving on to a different book because this doesn't agree with you, you turn this into a matter of "liberalism"
Yet on the same coin, if someone said a book constantly praising buff strong white dudes was pushing "conservativism" you'd probably have an aneurism.

The Road to Hell, Multiverse #3 - David Weber & Joelle Presby (2016)
The second book came out a year after the first, but the third book came out almost ten years after the second. That's a long time. It's been six years since the second book released, so it's anybody's guess when the next book would be. The series is clearly not anywhere near finished, so for those hoping for that, you'd be out of luck. Considering the author is sixty-eight as I'm writing this, it's entirely possible that the series won't ever be finished, but that doesn't matter to me overly much. The third book has a different co-author, but I didn't really notice much difference, though it's certainly questionable whether I would even if there was much difference. If there ever is a fourth book, I'll read it.
The third book is much more like the first book than the second, which was mildly disappointing. It's entirely focused again on war logistics, political maneuvering, and general day-to-day activities. In terms of action, not much happens until the last 20% or so. For me, the slowest part was the many consecutive pages describing the precise technical details of the military vehicles. Thankfully that was the sole infodump of it its kind.
The most amusing and interesting part of this for me exploring in detail what was hinted at in the previous book, which was that role that belief plays in terms of physical constants and universal mechanics in general. Hopefully it will be used to amusing effect in any potential future book.
Although they were included in the two previous books, the sentient animals play a larger role in this book and based on what occurs, will certainly have a larger role at later time. The two main sentient animal groups are cetaceans and simians. The portrayal of orcas as bloodthirsty warmongers who want to join the war effort to have a reason to eat humans again was certainly unexpected. The simians are also preparing for war in their own way as well.
At various points it seemed more like they would have preferred this to be straight up historical fiction rather than was it is, as there were various references to real world events
and some of the actions they took seemed like they would more appropriate to the real world than this setting.
It continues to be the case that I have stylistic and aesthetics disagreements, but that's to be expected at this point, especially with some of the dialogue as it can be entirely too bombastic and tries to drive its point home with all the excessiveness of hammering in nails with a sledgehammer. I did a fair bit of eyerolling, especially with any dialogue involving women or traditional concepts, but it only mildly detracts overall.
Will I have forgotten a lot of it if there's another book? Yeah, probably, but it doesn't really matter, and I'm sure it'll work out just fine.

Bloodline is shit.
All of a sudden Lindon is a humanitarian?
People literally stabbed him in the back, and he is damaging himself to help them. He sisn't even killing those who tried to kill him and Yerrin.

I'm talking about the western shit ideology in books of not killing your enemies.
They always let the bad guy go, or don't ensure the kill, allowing the bad guy to return (and be easy writing for future books).
Look at the Joker and others in comics. It's a reason anti-hero fantasy took off. People are fed up of the bad guys killing and getting away with it.

Last book Lindon was murking fuckers left and right for points, now he is allowing them to nearly kill him/ betray him, and he is only talking to them. He got betrayed and he is still trying to save the people who betrayed him. I hate that shit in fantasy. This fucking "turn the other cheek" shit. If you get hit, hit back harder. You don't lay down, spread your back pussy and grit your teeth.

But even then I'd take an endless fun sci fi adventure that makes one look positively at the future or a look at Japan's corporate world from the eyes of youth, disguised as a story about a guy who defeats any enemy with one punch. I'll take them because there should be things like that too, not just lessons from ancient and medieval stoic monks.

Extremely competent but generic and unexciting fantasy. Good thing to read if you just want a decent-ass epic fantasy that doesn't climb up its own ass, and doesn't feel like an anime pitch or repainted D&D campaign.

Spoiler: The only part of the story that actually felt cathartic or exciting was when Fengbold got the Alexander Nevsky treatment. Otherwise the series is just really solid.

Because they had other reasons for it, some logical, some just based on culture or religious nonsense.

And of course there are other extraordinary situations that can take the equation either way. Women did typically participate in defense of towns and forts. Women have fought on the battle field and pretty much every culture in existence has stories about it. Women did fight men in 1v1 combat and there's multiple noted women who gained fame from doing it repeatedly.

So in a world of magic and fuck all is it possible to make the argument more women should go to war? What if there's no population issues? What if the society heavily honors death in combat, be it male or female? What if you're facing a life ending threat where it matters fuck all if you survive because you're dead if the frontline fails?

Plenty such circumstances. Of course you don't think to talk about any of those and just parrot that "hurr durr women are weak" because you don't want to have to think about different concepts or open your mind to new ideas, you want to exclude women.

Just to continue that thought, I'm re-reading the Silmarillion after reading Bakker. No offense to master Tolkien of course, but his elves, with the exception of Fëanor, are all totally one-dimensional. Bakker's not-elves are so complex and emotionally rich in comparison.

By the way, for whoever might want it, the Wertzone made this 146-page .pdf compilation of the History of Eärwa. It's pretty nicely fleshed out and may be the closest thing to a Bakker Silmarillion that we'll ever get. I mean, I hope he writes a real Silmarillion clone focused on the Cûno-Inchoroi Wars and the tutelage.

lmao, It was only the pampered and soft nations that used only men to fight back in the day anyway. Their lives were so soft and cushy they could half-assedly wage war with a minority of their population. Every time there's been actual hard as fuck motherfuckers who actually lived harsh lives, they never had shit cozy enough to leave like a third of their fighting force behind. It's why people like the Mongols actually conquered nearly half the world, because they were all, men and women, hard as fuck, capable of fighting and didn't give two shits about dumb fuck shit like propriety between the sexes when it came to battle. But then they got soft as fuck once they started taking in the loser attitudes of the conquered people and grew fat and soft, thinking there was a "right" and "wrong" way to wage war, like only sending a certain kind of person to war.

Can someone help me name the major religions of my setting please?

The first religion in my setting that believes that the world is a sleeping god's dream. I was thinking of there being two factions, one trying to keep him asleep, believing that his awakening would end the world, and another believing that if they awaken him, they would be rewarded with true existence.

Another religion I'm thinking of believes that something happened when the world was being made, with different sub-groups disagreeing on exactly "what" that was, ranging from the equivalent of original sin to the gods leaving to fight some foe, and their goal is to direct the god's attention back so they can finish the job, or at least do it for them.

Finally, I have a group that believes in a "man grew proud" scenario, where humanity was struck down for their arrogance, devastating the world with their actions, and either advocate against using the main magic of the setting whenever that's feasible or advocate using it to repair the damage (not sure which yet, or if I should do both).

Keep in mind, it's deliberately unclear if one of these religions/beliefs, if any, is "correct", and I don't plan on clearing it up in-setting or out of it. If any gods exist, they're not showing up anytime soon.

I enjoyed them too but I have to admit some of the majesty was lost of Lady and the other Taken and high level wizards

Maybe they humanized them too much and they started to seem like just another Goblin/One Eye with a bit more power by accident, nothing special about them, no longer remnants of an ancient world etc. Or maybe that was the point, that that's all they are anyway, petty humans with better tricks. Either way something was lost for me when the dominant dynamic of the books was no longer about surviving in the shadow of these monsters.

The organizing of the defenses stuff was the most fun for me.

Also, if you want to take the religion in your world seriously, read pic related for an understanding of how important religion is to the people and developments in your history. And ground religion in a realistic sense, that is, don't make it sound like a fairy tale with meaningless mythology. Contrary to popular belief most mythologies are used as analogy to explain metaphysical beliefs.

Renegade Immortal

I've read and dropped:
I Shall Seal the Heavens

True Martial World
Ancient Strengthing Technique

I specifically want something that follows the format of a weak to strong character in a dog eats dog martial arts world, preferably without the accompannying pitfalls of the generic ones--that being purple or repetitious prose and thousands of chapters of filler

It's from the author of Renegade Immortal and I Shall Seal the Heavens, I'm curious to know why you dropped the second one it was really good imo.
Divine Throne of Primordial Blood is quite good too. It's basically the origin story of Xianxia where people shift from stealing monster abilities to cultivating their own power.
Warlock of the Magus World is often recommended here for the darker story, if you want a dog eat dog world it's gonna be this one.

Whatever you do don't pick up Martial God Asura and Emperor's Domination, every arc is basically copy pasted.

Because it's Sanderson rehashing a bunch of generic characters he uses in every series he writes, while putting more focus on his "magic system" than anything else, then throwing in a bunch of nonsensical customs that are never explained or justified to make it seem like there's actually some real worldbuilding when there isn't. And the powers are copied wholesale from video games, most notably Kingdom Hearts.
The pacing is terrible, you could trim 60% of each book and leave out nothing of value. The characters are awful, Shallan is somehow even worse than Sanderson's typical quirky so funny empowered girl character that was already bad enough before Stormlight. The Villains are bad, Megatr- I mean Odium is utterly uninteresting. Then there's the way he tries to tie it in to all his other series so you're forced to buy more of his books to know what's happening (the exact same thing Comic publishers do to con money out of you). The themes are bad, "muh colonialism", never read that before.
All in all there's just nothing in them that's actually good, especially not the prose. I'm sure some anon will oblige to post the "He said in pretty good Alethi" excerpt.

If you want some stupid low brow fantasy, Cradle is unironically better. It's still dumb, but at least every book isn't padded out by 600 pages and crossed over with 4 other franchises. If you want some actually good modern fantasy try the Five Gods series by Bujold. But for your own benefit read something other than Sanderson.
