Judging from Homage to Catalonia, Stalin seemed more concerned with defeating the anarchists and Trotskoids than defeating Franco. Why was that when he could have united with them and easily defeated Franco, then mopped the floor with the dissidents afterwards with no difficulty?

Trying to see if Orwell misrepresented or exaggerated the situation at all

Don't use Homage to Catalonia as a source on Stalin. Orwell was a violently anti-soviet socdem, as shown in his work and actions, so anything he wrote on Stalin is inevitably biased beyond belief. That being said, Stalin didn't help much against Franco, but only really because he was more concerned about Germany, and anyway, Franco was strong and backed by the Axis.

This is irrelevant and untrue. Stalin was only concerned with protecting the Spanish Republican Government, any concern came second. The only reason the trotskyites were targeted is because there were legitimate proofs mounting that the trotskyists internationally were thoroughly infiltrated by fascist elements. As for the anarchists, they were being wreckers and threatening the stability of the Republican government at crucial moments as they are wont to do.

Truth is only tankies and fascists have enough competence to do accomplish anything at all, anarchists literally pissed their pants. (Many such cases)

>Stalin didn't help much
The Soviet Union and Mexico were the only countries to help the Spanish Republican government. The Soviets and their brother communist movements around the world organized the international brigades which were a huge force against the fascists. Stalin also gave an extremely large amount of soviet aircraft to the Spanish Republican government and around 1000 pilots, as well as tank crews. One must also remember that this was at a time when the Soviet Union was preparing for war against the Nazi threat so to give the aid they did in their situation shows their extreme commitment to international solidarity.

Further, I resent it when people say ‘Stalin’ as a stand-in for the Soviet government. Stalin did not act alone and was not a dictator.

He wasn’t, he wanted a united front to defeat Franco first and anarkiddies/trots were standing in the way of it.
