Because he gives genuine advice and promotes a lot of interesting historical figures but it's all just to endorse his boring brand of liberalism that causes every issue in the world that he whines about.

I think some of his stuff can have a positive impact on aimless people who feel lost and need some sort of guidance in the form of self-help. If he only did the self help stuff it would be fine with me but he kinda ruins it by using the self help as a vehicle for his lazy politics, misogyny and transphobia.

When I was a cringe Twitter communist I used to hate him
I haven’t used Twitter in 3 years or so now and kind of like a lot of what he says the more I look into his stuff. He’s done a lot of good for a lot of people in changing their ways, and he seems to legitimately care about teaching and his students. Sure, it’s not the deepest thing in the world, what he talks about, but I think that’s by design. He wants to appeal to the average person who may know little to fuck all about psychology and philosophy, and he does that well, for better or worse.

There are different groups that hate him for different reasons; here's some of the main ones:

A) Contrarian edgelords who actually agree with most of what he says but want to stand out by going against the hype.
B) Woke retards who base their opinion on mainstream media attacks on him.
C) People who don't buy into phenomenology (either they scoff at it similar to how he scoffs at post-modernism; usually they don't understand that school of thought's influence on Clinical Psychology)
D) Midwits who are too dumb to flush out his arguments properly and see him as another Deepak Chopra
E) People who have read things along the lines of pic related; their suspicion of him is compounded by the fact he has (arguably superficial) common ground with the alt right

Those are the main groups that I can think of anyway.

F) Those who recognize his reduction of religion and metaphysics to being purely psychological processes that only serve to support his brand of boomer liberalism
Arguing that working a soulless 40 hour job is actually the basic condition of man and without it out life has no meaning, and his purposefully profane interpretations of scripture to back up such claims. Its a fucking joke.

I see you fall into the C category with a dash of D.

C)
He doesn't reduce religion and metaphysics to psychological processes; he frequently cites Mircea Elide as a chief influence (hierophanies). Regarding his views on metaphysics, his main source of inspiration is Carl Jung. Neither of these points toward an assumption that religion/metaphysics are "purely psychological processes."

As far as his supposedly arguing that people should work soulless jobs; as a clinician, he's influenced by the applied phenomenology of Carl Rogers as well as the daseinanalysis of Ludwig Binswanger and Medard Boss. I'd like to see you reduce their work to the championing of soulless work as the sole source of a meaningful life.

D)
There's nothing wrong with using animal models in science. In fact, the research he was doing at the time I had him as a prof involved studying pleasure/reward circuits in mice. His most famous use, lobsters, is just used to draw attention to the fact that the structure regulating dominance behavior (i.e. formation of hierarchies) has existed "longer than trees have." This isn't an argument in favor of a specific political or social system, that's extemporaneous to what he's getting at. Rather, he's asserting that social structures will have to accommodate such drives in some form. He isn't using biology the same way as Deepak uses Quantum Physics.
_________________________________
I took his class at University before he blew up. The pic is the textbook that was used (it's out of print but he licensed it into a course reader). He drew heavily on Part III of the book (Kantian Models in the Phenomenological Outlook); which is the Rogers/Binswanger/Boss stuff (Jean Piaget's and George A. Kelly's constructivist models are also covered in that section). What's available of his lectures on YouTube is only the first half of the course and isn't that representative of all that we were taught.

If you want to write me off as a fanboy, you can go ahead. In reality, I had to listen to the guy 4 hours a week for 4 months and spend hours reading shit that he himself curated. I have a pretty solid idea of him (and know where to be suspicious...the correct answer was E).

I only hate him because he bloviates. Everything from Peterson I've ever seen is the most basic undergrad shit that he dresses up by maundering around it at incredible length; I find him agonizing to listen to. Every time it seems like he's approaching the explication of a legitimate point he just starts talking around something else with generalities again. It also doesn't help that his most devoted fanboys treat anything with actual complexity like it's witchcraft.

>> No.17982053

>>17981977
I never got the sense that he was bloviating, I think he has a great talent for presenting complex materials in a way that's so simple that the average person will understand. I haven't paid too much attention to him in recent years though.

His fanbase does seem pretty ridiculous though. They existed at the university before he was famous (I almost didn't take his section of Personality Psych because I had too many acquaintances fall under his spell and hype him up. My sense was he was presenting basic truth bombs and lightly profaning a few sacred cows; we didn't get much of that at a Canadian University and I figured people were just overly excited by that. However, his class was actually pretty great...but I figured I'd had enough of him and didn't take Maps of Meaning).

Also, one thing that I'm sure isn't in the lectures he posted online (I'm sure there would have been a firestorm if it were there): when we were covering 'g' as a psychometric he went off about black people having lower IQs and social programmes need to be developed to take that into account. No one challenged him on it, the class was just silent lol.
