There's Hugo's Last Day of a Condemned Man (about a man sentenced to death). It's a plea against death penalty, Hugo was accused of having used a bland backgroundless character as his condemned man, but I find the book to be full of accurate details about the life of French prisons at the time. It's also pretty short.
