Hello /lit/, /g/ here. I'm sure that you'll know how to appreciate this great news:

"Kobo unbuttons for $129 eReader Touch Edition"
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/23/dnp-kobo-unbuttons-for-129-ereader-touch-edition-we-go-hands/

>> No.1796880

I'm actually interested to read the reviews on this thing. It's the same panel as in the Kindle.

Doesn't support .mobi, however [at least, I don't think it does], so I'd need to convert everything in Calibre.

>> No.1796886

I fucking hate touch screens.

>> No.1796892

>> No.1796891

>>1796886
That's one of the things that puts me off [other than the native .mobi support]. I know it's different technology, but I'm forever cleaning my iphone screen.

>> No.1796900

why would anyone want a touchscreen reader? it fucking sucks to see your screen covered with shit and fingerprints. an you are SUPPOSED to stare at the screen for hours.

>> No.1796902

>>1796880
This new Kobo reader seems to have a bigger screen than the Kindle, look at the movie in the article.

>> No.1796903

>>1796891
.mobi support doesn't really bother me.
I get all of my ebooks in epub, and convert them to .mobi anyway.

>> No.1796912

>>1796900
I prefer a bigger (touch-)screen that will cover the whole front of the device and get rid of that awkward looking keyboard.

>> No.1797008

Comparing it with a Kindle, the Kobo seems to be:
cheaper
faster
smaller
bigger screen
better PDF support
and touchscreen is also a plus imho

We might have a new King of the E-readers here, guys. At least until the next generation of Kindles and Nooks.

>> No.1797013

>>1797008
So it might only be King for a day - the new Nook is unveiled tomorrow, though it'll be 2012 before the Kindle 4.

The delay you see when changing pages is the same as if you pushed a button. It's not because of the touchscreen, it's the way this type of display works.

does it use e-ink? If not I think I'll stick with what works

Read the article, It's an "e-ink pearl" display. Latest kind of e-ink technology, same as the one used in Kindle 3.

>> No.1799470

I want one. Even with international shipping it comes out cheaper than a kindle and the absence of hurtle turtelingly huge keyboard underneath is a plus.

But it could take several weeks after the release to get here. Whereas I can get a kindle by Friday.

What to do, what to do.

Get the Kindle. At the very least, if you decide to upgrade to something newer later [such as the Kindle 4 in 2012], you'll stand a better chance of selling it.

Or - if you really don't want a keyboard sporting e-reader, check out the just announced new version of the Nook:

You mentioned "international shipping".
They say on Kobo's website that it's "the first international e-reader". You might check what does that mean for you.

>> No.1799689

>>1799513
As far I can tell, nothing. Cheap PR, I think. "Hey let's call it 'international'! It's vague enough to sound modern and cool while being completely meaningless!"

>>1799486
The Nook Touch is interesting. It doesn't have the eyeball-burstingly ugly back cover the Kobo has. But the same problems apply, really.

Mayhap the kindle gets a price drop after this news, though...

yeah, I'm poor and I want an ebook reader.

That's what I was half-expecting, until I saw a pic of the new Nook today and burst out laughing.

Then I read further and learned that they added touch, BUT stripped out 3G, web-browsing, and music-playing. So it's basically the Kobo Touch's deformed twin, born a day later.

On that note, the best comment I've seen:
>I personally hate the new look. If eReaders were Lanisters, the new nook would be Tyrion. Here's hoping that even though fugly, it's still badass.

One might argue that it's a distraction-free dedicated reading device. Don't know what to think yet, but I love minimalism and if the reading experience is improved, I'm okay with this.

>> No.1801753

>>1801716
That's sexy and nice imo. They say that material is rubbery and the grip is almost perfect.

>> No.1801759

First reaction: I really don't like the new nook. It doesn't look 'right' - seems too wide, based on pics of people holding it. That said, initially I didn't like the idea of the Kindle, and I ended up loving that, so I'll have to keep an open mind.

I do. Got it for $60 back when Borders closed a bunch of stores. Native (albeit basic) CBR/CBZ support FTW.
