Muslimbros, where do I start with Sufism? I was reading a bit about it recently and was wondering why Muslims do not talk about it more often. From the outside Islam looks often solely legalistic, and it’s sad that it is not talked about more.

>sufism
How interesting that the less islamic islam becomes the more interesting it gets.

Nevertheless, I don't really understand why you would go for "quaking-in-fear-and-worthlessness" sort of semitic navel-gazing mysticism that doesn't lead to anywhere interesting when you have much better developed mystical traditions in Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, and even Christianity.

And you need to learn more, which is a good thing that I'm here.

Sufism is bootleg neoplatonism as adapted by semites, with a nominally islamic aesthetic.

You're either ignorant or in denial.

Mainly that, I suppose. I’ll take anything interesting though. Many good things often pop up in general as a thread develops too

I don't know if it is suited for a complete novice, and I've only read the first chapter (my copy is in the mail), but I suspect Lama'at by Fakh al Din al Iraqi is the most beautiful book ever written, and it is most certainly about sufism.

Go for something sober, like Junaid al-Baghdadi
nicknamed "The Master"
Going too far into esoterism too quickly can destabilise foundational practices which are the building blocks of the lifestyle. Plus most of the superesoteric people ending up burning out, or paradoxically prioritizing the egoistic attainment of spiritual drunkeness over the practice itself

what if you realize that you're not you though
what if you realize that heaven or hell pertain to a form that is not you?

Lol why do non Muslims find sufis so exciting. Its literally a bunch of break dancing heretics who worship graves and schizos who talk to the dead.

sufis strive to know the self. even the orthodox like imam al Ghazali and he taught that the way to knowing God is by knowing the self. I don't know if a purely exoteric islam can lead to such knowledge. I do know that Ghazali feared that the exoteric religion of his time had become empty of such depth.
