Dark Academia is gay, but I can't hate it. Underneath it all there is a legitimate yearning for the the kind of education that has become increasingly unfashionable in the humanities. It appears to be a kind of nascent 'woke-reactionaryism" that demands, against those who would see the entire edifice of western culture pulled down, that there is a place for both a classical education, and multi-ethnic genderfluid hentai addicts.

I disagree. Strongly. The aesthetic component is all that is currently being engaged in, and thus the movement is undoubtedly superficial, but it is rooted, like all aesthetics, in a greater context in which a person's desire plays an important role. This is why aesthetics is so important in converting people to various ideologies, and has been weaponized so thoroughly for advertising and propaganda. They're generally trying to imitate the kind of milieux which produced Highsmith's Ripley or Christie's detectives or Waugh's faggots, or even Genet and Huysmans, though obviously the first three are probably more readily accessible to them. You have to keep in mind that the 90s movie adaptations focused on the failing upper class of the 1930s is their version of old movies, whereas up til that point everyone knew who Marlena Dietrich or Noel Coward was if you wanted to see old movies of 1930s decadent fruits. The Dead Poets Society is mentioned a lot ITT too, but you have to realize the majority of the people who follow the trend saw that and the other movies because their parents thought that was a good education, but whose parents would equally be unlikely to read the books which spawned that trend or force them to watch Noel Coward movies. It's a kind of trend which is divorced from its own references, so they don't know why exactly they're vibing with the interwar period, but they can still pick out things which seem to style the tensions and expectations they feel. Ironically, the wealth disparity and naviete necessary to get with such a socially anxious trend makes them more like the 1930s gen than they probably want to be.
