Dark Academia is gay, but I can't hate it. Underneath it all there is a legitimate yearning for the the kind of education that has become increasingly unfashionable in the humanities. It appears to be a kind of nascent 'woke-reactionaryism" that demands, against those who would see the entire edifice of western culture pulled down, that there is a place for both a classical education, and multi-ethnic genderfluid hentai addicts.

It has a better chance of defeating the "remove all dead white male" types, and on their own ground, than anything the right has conceived yet.

There really isn't, it's all based on images and fantasies created by mass media like movies TV shows and photography, none of which depict any more than the mass consumer media's best and most enticing packaging for selling products and lifestyles. There isnt anything significantly or possibly literary at the bottom of it anymore than there is something living beneath an Instagram feed.

I disagree. Strongly. The aesthetic component is all that is currently being engaged in, and thus the movement is undoubtedly superficial, but it is rooted, like all aesthetics, in a greater context in which a person's desire plays an important role. This is why aesthetics is so important in converting people to various ideologies, and has been weaponized so thoroughly for advertising and propaganda. It doesn't exist in a mere vacuum, but speaks to people's wants and needs with a promise of satisfying them.

Embrace it. It’s not quite fetishization, anyway. The “dark academia” trend is the only thing maintaining the Western canon in the face of the “decolonization” (etc) of literature. We should be glad that regular women are still interested in the Greeks etc, and are still willing to support cis white men of letters. If you have any ambitions towards literature, these are the people who are going to read your shitty “traditional” writing and not complain about your lack of concern for race, gender, sexuality, and whatever else.

The modern world churns out these judgements

But anyway I think if anyone lambasts the beloved Eyre or Bronte of girls who want to embody the bookish look, for being “too white”, those voices likely won’t be the central voices of the subculture (if you can call it that). That’s my 2 cents. It’s weird to analyze this so much, but I think “dark academia” is both more significant and less significant than we’re making it

They still don't concieve of culture as constantly evolving game of imaginative investment, yet they are proof it is exactly that.

An aesthetic revolving around a mythologised European history - and they have managed to comodify it.

like it or not, this is the only way literature survives the future.

But if you actually believe in the power of literature, you won't worry. Because You know that even if someone keeps picking up the classics "for the wrong reasons," repeatedly encountering the heights of human creativity and story telling will make a mark on you. Who cares if a person is reading Dostoyevsky and Jane Austen "aesthetically," if they are capable of any thoughtfulness and sensitivity they will find what is good in literature. And if they don't, they were ngmi anyway.

And besides, I'm willing to bet a significant portion of the posters here started reading seriously at least in part to feel smarter than others

That's what teenagers may think, but all fashions are symbolically loaded with ideas. It's why you will never find an ex-punk fascist or a former cattle ranch worker in Antifa. It's a bout forming an identity around symbols which are themselves politically charged.

All these kids are gonna turn into little milos

Dressing styles are just LARPing, kinda lays bare the hollow foundation of the modern world, based on a drifting groundwork of trends powered by consumerism and the public consciousness getting bored of the previous trends. Mindless drones don't understand that you can be something without dressing in a specific manner.

I don't know why I should wear anything else than sports clothes. That's the best and ultimate comfiest type of clothing the modern world provides. It's the pinnacle of scientific evolution in clothes production.

You are right, the labor of job is not role play, but we still fill narratives around it. The second you use your job as a noun to describe yourself it is at some level become a part of a narritive you are telling yourself.

There is a huge difference between "I work as a Lawyer" and "I AM a Lawyer" - the second way of thinking, which is the way we all think, turns it at some level into a mental game where you narrativise your job into a greater story about yourself.

We all create stories to rationalise and describe our lives - a fantasy based around the real interactions we have everyday.

Your LARP just dictates you have to take yourself seriously on the internet.

I question your use of the word narrative. Your premise is that a narrative is a construction we need to unpack and dismantle reddit-style. the thought that someone sees himself as a lawyer (who not only spends 40% of the current day or year, but dedicates his life to being a lawyer with a family and a hobby and so on) doesn't occur to you. when you distinguish between the "fantasy" of being a lawyer and "real everyday interactions" you rid yourself of the possibility that there are genuine people with a genuine vocation and talents. you think there is a "deep down" identity untouched by society. when your neighbour goes for a pint with you, he's still a lawyer going for a pint. this is not a fictious narrative. it's a description of reality, or a truthful narration, if you will.

I'd assume the elements of romanticism and decadence. Sort of like "goth" doesn't necessarily have the same elements in all subcultures across all eras.
They're generally trying to imitate the kind of milieux which produced Highsmith's Ripley or Christie's detectives or Waugh's faggots, or even Genet and Huysmans, though obviously the first three are probably more readily accessible to them. You have to keep in mind that the 90s movie adaptations focused on the failing upper class of the 1930s is their version of old movies, whereas up til that point everyone knew who Marlena Dietrich or Noel Coward was if you wanted to see old movies of 1930s decadent fruits. The Dead Poets Society is mentioned a lot ITT too, but you have to realize the majority of the people who follow the trend saw that and the other movies because their parents thought that was a good education, but whose parents would equally be unlikely to read the books which spawned that trend or force them to watch Noel Coward movies. It's a kind of trend which is divorced from its own references, so they don't know why exactly they're vibing with the interwar period, but they can still pick out things which seem to style the tensions and expectations they feel. Ironically, the wealth disparity and naviete necessary to get with such a socially anxious trend makes them more like the 1930s gen than they probably want to be.
