normal people (no hipster/elitists) opinion on this? Worth a read?

>> No.1792880

No. It is ambitious but doesn't deliver.

Ergo, it is a waste.

Well I consider myself a pretty average reader, as in I don't indulge in all that classical literature that /lit/ just seems to rave on about, honestly House of Leaves was by far the best recommendation for a read that /lit/ has ever given me, while that might not be saying much considering all the trash they've recommended to me you should honestly just read it but don't go into it thinking "THIS IS GONNA BE PRETENTIOUS GARBAGE" just flow with the story and hopefully you'll find it as good as I did.

>> No.1792884

the whole book = mediocre
the navidson part = really good

I've been called a hipster AND elitist before

>> No.1792892

People don't like it because it's different. It's a good enough book, I read it 3 years ago. I found the junkie narrative a bit hackneyed and melodramatic but otherwise a good novel. I kinda want to read it again since seeing this thread.

baby's first postmodernism

if anybody who calls herself/himself an "elitist" likes this they're asking for a punch in the chops

>> No.1792906

i love it. the weird layouts compliments the great writing. the only thing i didn't like was when Navidson reads House of Leaves

I thought it was pretty cool when I was a moody grimderp teenager, but that was 10 years ago, and I haven't had enough interest in revisiting it to see if it still stands up.

You do realize that by preemptively disqualifying the opinions of hipsters and/or elitists that you are acting like both a hipster and an elitist, right?

This.

I haven't read it, but I'm going to say you should read it.

Is that normal enough? Sounds pretty normal.

No hipsters and elitists? How many people walk around making a conscious effort to be those things? They're what other people call you, most of the time. So childish.

give me better post-modernism NOW!

>> No.1793830

I actually have this next to me, was contemplating reading this or The Republic once i'm done with Crime and Punishment(which should be soonish). Also, my UK edition doesn't have colours on words like "House". Will that be a problem?

>> No.1793833

It has a great storyline and a subpar storyline. You decide whether it's worth reading or not. I enjoyed it a lot.

Shouldn't be too much of a problem. Especially if you're just taking a ride and enjoying it that way.

If you're going onto forums to discuss every aspect of the book; maybe buy the colored edition and then kill yourself for wanting to take this book seriously.

>> No.1793868

I liked it.

Beckett is more virtuously composed but HoL has the plus side of being a fine composition beyond the narrative and the text.
HoL has the advantage that the layout and the design convey story elements and emotions differently (IMHO better) that a straight text.

Some recommendations in that regard? I know a few books which play with that idea but they are not as profound as HoL.

idk about layout fuckery but donald barthelme does some neat postmodern-y kinda stuff with images that might be up your alley
