Start with something like
"Constructing the subject" by Kurt Danziger. Then go read papers by Paul Meehl (1978's "tabular risks" is a classic)

I am doing my PhD on the psychology of despair (i define despair on my work) and my reading list so far has been the classical pessimists (Parmenides, Heraclitus etc.), Plato, Al Maarri, Spinoza, Gracian, Burton, Afdal Kashani, Leopardi, Goethe, Schopenhauer, Blake, Jung of course eastern schools of thought
