What are the best depictions of hell in literature? Any equivalents like the underworld also welcome

As far as modern literature goes, there's Buzzatti's Travel in the Hell. For YA (but in this case, excellent YA) there's the main character trip to the underworld in the last tome of His Dark Materials.
